Fuzzy eyes

First up I should say I have bizarre eyes, there is a muscle imbalance and so I have a lens like a milk bottle for my right eye, and perfect vision in my left.

But my issue is the BG spikes causing my left eye to play up. It used to only be above 15mmol/l I'd go a bit fuzzy..... Then it dropped to 12mmol/l..... I'm now sitting here 1.5 hours post breakfast. Checked BG and 10.3 and my left eye is useless. (I was 7.8 pre breakfast so this spike is not bad really)

Has anyone else noticed a trend of being more and more sensitive to the high BG? I'm not worried about a 10 this soon after eating as I know ill be back to 7 prior to my next meal.

And PLEASE don't suggest a low carb diet. I eat 100-150g a day. That is as low as I'm willing to go.... I would never be able to sustain anything else for the test of my life so I see no benefit in doing it short term.

I've got the clinic on Friday so I'm going to bring it up then, but wanting to see who else is in a similar place!

My eyes get a bit dry and gritty if my BG goes up over 9ish, which can cause blurriness due to altered tear film rather than muscle/focus issues. Not sure if that's what you're experiencing.

For me it's a couldy issue. As if something is covering my eye. I imagine its what its like if you have cataracts!

The muscle issue is not diabetes related, but does mean my right eye is out of action the majority of the time even with normal BG.

Cataracts are like looking through a dirty window - a bit hazy but much worse when there is bright light. You'd be very young to have cataracts, so more likely a temporary change to tear film. Only other experience I can think of: is it more like someone set off a flashlight in your eyes? I also get that but usually when I'm hypo.

That is exactly what it's like! I know it's not actual cataracts, just a reaction to higher BG. But it's irritating me that I get it at even lower BG than I did before. Yes I was at 10.3 earlier, but I was 6.7 just before I ate my lunch. If I'd has more insulin to prevent the spike I would have been low by lunch. Frustrating!

Not until I go into double figures would my eyes go fuzzy. Your far too young for cataracts Hale but you should discuss your fuzzy vision at the clinic appointment just so that can check your eyes, fluctuating bg can temporarily affect vision when newly diagnosed but this usually settles down once the diabetes is under control.

Regarding postprandial highs, after reading Scheiner's Think like a Pancreas book I started injecting a little ahead of my food which made a big difference, perhaps this is something you could experiment with.

I inject ahead where appropriate, 10-15 minutes before pasta or potatoes as far as possible.

My best friend is a dietician so she's thinking up alternative breakfasts for me to try and reduce the morning spike as its the one affecting me the most, and then will discuss with the consultant on Friday!

Some inject ahead much longer than 10-15 mins but I wouldn't advise it. I know your a porridge eater much like myself, if you add seeds to the porridge the fats (good ones) help slow down the digestion of the meal, I also add a heaped spoonful of natural yogurt to it as well as blueberries, I'm betting the dietitian may recommend the same.

Had the problem of spikes at breakfast, to reduce spike I tried injecting more insulin but then had to feed the insulin for the last two hours to prevent hypo. I did experiment injecting earlier and now inject 45 mins before eating breakfast. No spike, no hypo. This only applies to breakfast though for me and if you do try it would recommend a bg test every 15 mins. For me, it seems like my body takes a while to start properly in the morning. Can inject straight away before food for rest of day.

My eyes go blurry if I'm above 15, (not so much any more) when I went to retinopathy a few months ago I asked why as I was certain I needed glasses and the optician said that the eyes love glucose and they grab at it but when there's too much they don't know what to do with it so it acts like a film until levels return to normal.

So eyes really do glaze over ;)

Actually very interesting - I remember reading a while back about some research into a blood sugar testing system using tears or something like that.

Haha Andy you know I've NEVER EVER EVER even heard of low carbing ;)

Interesting about the glucose grabbing the eyes. I wouldn't mind if it was at 15, it's just that it's now at 10 that its getting silly. It cleared just before lunch, testing for lunch gave me a nice healthy 6.7

Ill maybe try my porridge with a few seeds... I have some in my drawer to pick at when I need to so I'm sure they'll go nicely with it. Good idea! I'm a fussy ****** when it comes to food and I eat at my desk so I'm restricted with what I can have. Either cold food or canteen food! I do like my porridge though :)

I had my retinopathy check last week. I gave up on opticians specs long ago because I can never see through the damned things when I get them. So I manage very well with ASDA's cheapo 1.5 specs and have worn the same strength for about 5 years now. The optician said my eyes haven't changed much, but I let him talk me into buying a pair of specs as he said I'd notice the definition more with them than with my cheapos. So I paid out £78 for a cheap pair of opticians specs and lo and behold - they're useless!!! I can see to read with them but they're useless for the computer and as I need to do both at work - that's £78 down the drain yet again. So I'm back to my cheapos which miraculously I can see to read with and I can also see the computer clearly with.

Grace my mother does the same, works fine for normal reading glasses! Sadly that's not an option for me as I don't have a prescription for one eye and a huge prescription in the other!

Sitting with fuzzy eyes again right now, BG 11.1 at 1 hour after dinner :( it's so bad I'm struggling to read my phone - not ideal. Roll on the clinic on Friday!

I had a similar problem with my eyes and some sort of mussle issue, at the annual eye test she asked me if id had any operations on my eyes so I told her what I thought id had and that was they popped my eyes out took a bit of mussle out of the strong one and put it back in the week eye, well she looked at me like I was a raving lunatic so I suppose that couldn't have been what they did lol, it seemed reasonable all those years but after the look on her face I guess it isn't, my eyes are evenly bad now hehe im as blind as a bat but wear contacts because glasses don't last very long as a stonemason

anyways hope you get better soon x
