Hi all,

In recent correspondence I've had which confirmed type 2 diabetes - there is a reference to me having ' Single anti-GAD Antibody that is negative'

Could anyone decipher this?

Thanks

It means you do not have the anti-GAD antibodies.
Testing positive for them and having diabetes means you have T1.

Testing negative like you did is inconclusive.
T2's don't have them, but you can have T1 with one of the other antibodies or even without testing positive for any of the known ones.

Thanks - so I presume the word single in the sentence means they've only test the once?

I think it means they only test the one type of antibody.
Sadly some drs think it means that you are not type 1 if negative. This is wrong, it’s only conclusive if positive not the other way around.

Oh, I'm not sure really!
Mine simply said what the result and the normal value was (negative in my case).

(I was still diagnosed with T1, based on low C-peptide and very quick progression to insulin with a low carb diet and oral medication (gliclazide) not helping much. Didn't have the other antibodies tested.)
