Gastroparesis

I am a poorly controlled type 2 diabetic and for over a year I have had bowel/stomach problems and I recently had a CT Colonoscopy
The results were inconclusive and they diagnosed IBS, then last week went to see a Diabetic Dietition, and she believed I had Gastroparesis and told me to go back to my GP
Visited him yesterday to ask for tests and was told there are no tests for it and will have to have a stoma bag fitted
No referral just contact the surgeon at the hospital and good luck
has anyone had experience of this and surely a stoma bag is not the only answer?

I paid privately to see a consultant who had a good amount of time to see me and to listen.

I was in and out of the hospital with blocked bowels and it was a **** horrible time.

By doing this I could see the consultant with the best qualifications and write ups by googling.. And I jumped the nhs queues to wait and to be seen.

He then reffered me to have every test done on the nhs.... Colonoscopys etc all came back negative. However the "shapes" test came back horrendous. I still had 48 out of 60 dhapes still travelling through my inners after 5 days....

I saw consultant on nhs again.. Only paid privately for initial consultation. He admitted that from the symptoms I had described that he had thought I had ibs, but in fact turned out to be slow colonic transit...

There is the shapes test that could show up how fast your food is processed through your body.

The Consultant and I had long discussions and he would have referred me to the top stomach chap in the country who is in a London hospital.

However, I realised myself and the consultant is now researching this.. What the cause was. It has taken 18 months for my stomach to recover, but I am now discharged from consultants, off all medications and back to very normal digestion.

It would be worth asking if you could have a shapes test done before anything with a stoma bag being considered...

Hope this helps.

Hi Chris and welcome tot the forum.
It seems your diagnosis has been made by a dietitian who does not have the expertise to do this.

Your Drs reaction leaves a lot to be desired and the article I am linking explains the tests needed and treatments available.
http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/gastroparesis/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Is there another Dr. in the practice that you can see? You really need to push for more tests before a diagnosis is made.

Totally agree with prev poster.. My shapes test was a cheaper version of the smart pill in the article.

dont feel like eating ,today i had toast at breakfast, scone lunch and then 2 poached eggs for tea not my usual intake but my tummy is still swollen

Bloatedness is not the only symptom of gastrparesis....

Bloatedness can be caused by many other things as well. With slow colonic transit or gastroparesis boy you will know you are ill...sorry for following details...

My bloating with slow colonic waa not bloating as such. It was having food stuck going through my stomach...by the time it got to exit it was completed dehydrated and stuck. I have had ambulance people giving me morphine and literally unable to get off the toilet tillI was given it... My blood levels would also give me warnings....

Do you hear your stomach making noises of gurgling at any times?
