getting frustrated now

Hi all, have just taken my bg reading, 11.4 that is after a meal of steamed fish 4 very small new boiled potatoes and salad, I am really trying hard, all bran for breakfast 2 hours later 9.2 salad for lunch 2 hours later 9.4. I am supposed to be keeping my readings below 10. I feel like screaming :roll: :roll: :roll:
 
Hi. That meal sounds very healthy. It may take a few weeks for your blood sugar to settle down with the Metformin but I suspect the prescription may need to be increased beyond 500mg. Normally you would have another session with your GP and an Hba1c test around 3 months after diagnosis. If nothing has been setup I would be inclined to make an appointment or call to check next steps. Yes, you should be looking for readings below 10 and preferably below 8.5'ish.

If 4 potatoes send you up too much, then try 2 next time maybe? I can only have a very small amount of All Bran as a treat now and again. Maybe your could try bacon and egg? or Greek yoghurt and a few blueberries?

It's all a learning curve I'm afraid and my levels are still far too high as well. Good luck!
 
Hi. You don't say what you have to drink. Could this be your problem. Even the choice of sweetners can hava a big difference. I don;t use them , but my partner does. she's a type 2 diet only control. She uses splenda and finds the tablets have no effect on blood sugar levels. However she used some splenda powder last week, and her bm's went throuigh the roof. It turns out that the powder is 97% sugar.
You didn;t say what you were drinking , just a thought that may be of help
 
Hi, thanks for the replies, paragliderpete in response to you I never have or will have any sugar in drinks, I drink suger free squash, coffee, with semiskimmed milk or water but thanks for the response, nice to know you care :wink:
 
Hi Daibell, just to let you know I started on 2 x 500mg metformine but because I showed a sensitivity to it my doctor lowered the dose, I have to see the doctor and have my HBa1c in september, I dont want to be a bother to the doctor or nurse so I will just keep trying until then. Thanks.
 
Hi Alison. I agree with the other comments. I x 500mg metformin is normally a starter dose to give you a chance to get used to it. If you're sensitive to it, don't settle for a lower dose. Ask for the slow release version that doesn't affect most people the same.
Even so, metformin doesn't do a great deal so you'll need to look at your diet again. A few less potatos, and as said maybe look at the cereal. Some diabetics struggle to cope with that. Do you have other things with/after meals? Fruit? Sometimes people forget that has carbs. If diet doesn't help, it could be you need meds other than metformin. but don't rush, give things time to settle down, and remember exercise is also really important in controlling blood sugar levels. Above all, don't worry about bothering the doctor - its their job! They're paid to be bothered! If you can't get your levels down, don't leave it till September.

Yeah, i think there might be something confusing here.
Splenda is based on sugar, but like all these sweetening powders (I use canderel ) the key is in the weight of it that you use compared with volume. So canderel is about 97grams of carbs per 100! BUT, it is so light that one teaspoon is less than half a gram of carbs. I imagine the splenda is maybe 97grams sugar per 100 grams, BUT again only about a half a gram per teaspoon. So no problem.
