Hi all

I'm now a week in to my diagnosis. My blood sugar is mostly around the 9mmol mark now, having been in the high teens and twenties last week. I've only got low levels of ketones in my urine now as well.

I've been a low carber for several years (I used to be quite fat and lost a lot of weight low carbing) and I don't intend to change that.

Anyway... I'm currently taking 12u of abasaglar at bedtime, but I saw my diabetic nurse today and she suggested a gradual increase.

Bolus-wise I'll on novorapid, and since I eat very few carbs I rarely inject over 2 units. This doesn't seem to do very much at the moment. The nurse recommended getting the basal right before I worry too my about my bolus.

Maybe I'm being a but conservative with my bolus doses. I guess it all comes with practice and getting to know my own insulin requirements!

I guess I was just wondering if I'm doing the right thing at the moment?

Hello @Adam.froud Welcome to the forum :)

It's very early days for you but already you sound like you are going great. It's very much like walking a tightrope, so learning early on how to manage and cope with taking insulin and making adjustments is a good starting point, knowledge and confidence will come in time. The thing that helped me cope when I was diagnosed exactly 5 years ago was to learn as much as I could, so a good book to help you is 'Think like a pancreas', knowledge is power in becoming an expert.

We cannot help with advising on insulin doses as this is something you will need to review with your DSN - do speak to your team about getting a pen which delivers 1/2 units as your doses are so small this will help you a lot. Using this forum gives you access to our more experienced members who have lived with this for many years so please ask away, no question is silly and remember you are not alone ;)

I second the Think Like A Pancreas recommendation - it's a great book for Type 1s :)

For someone only a week into diagnosis you sound like you're doing great

And yes, it's generally best to get the basal dose right before looking at your bolus ratios :)
