I was delighted to find this site, with its wealth of help and knowledge...Phew! I was diagnosed with T2 last Thursday - with an A1c (hope I've go that term right) of 6.6. My doctor prescribed me Metex - 1 tablet a day and said 'lose weight and see me in 3 weeks.'...So, I'm sure like many others receiving this news, my head has been spinning ever since. while my GP went through the 'what this means' I took none of it in and have worn out the Google button on my PC. Needless to say, the bikkies and booze are in the bin and I'm living like a Trappist monk! I just wanted to touch base and say hello at this stage but feel I will have 1,000 questions shortly. One question I do have is should I see an Endocrinologist? GP didn't recommend it but I would like to be better informed. Anyway, thank you for reading this and all the very best to my new community. Hi @GabriellaG and welcome!

Seems like you’re already on the case and certainly in the UK, your HbA1c of 6.6 would be regarded as just into the diabetic range (in the units we use here, it’s equivalent to 48.6 mmol/mol, with the threshold used here set at 48. This calculator might help you as you read around the forum and see the numbers being quoted by others.

Metex looks to be a brand name for metformin, which is a fairly standard first line medication.

On your question about seeing an endocrinologist, it wouldn’t be usual for most type 2s here - there’d need to be some complicating or unusual factor.

Do ask if you have any questions - and I’d recommend taking a look at the dietdoctor.com website. You might be surprised at the foods suitable for managing type 2 diabetes - and reduce the need to feel like a Trappist monk!

Hi and welcome. Yes, Metformin is normal for many of us and fine. Some alcohols are fine such as spirits and wine. Avoid too much beer or drinks with added sugar. To reduce weight you need to reduce the carbs in your diet. I agree that you shouldn't need to see an Endo unless there are unusual symptoms. This forum provides excellent diabetes advice and possibly more than the average GP or Endo provides.
