Glandular Fever + Codeine

I was diagnosed with glandular fever yesterday afternoon and was told that I would have to go for additional liver testing in 3-6 weeks, I didnt have chance to ask why because I was crying my eyes out over the phone to the doctor and thought it would be best to do this in private.

Do you think this additional testing is diabetes related or just GF related and is something they check regardless? I'm absolutely petrified as I think my liver is going to be in poor condition after this and I know diabetes + bad liver is not good news.

I'm taking codeine 30/500mg for the pain in my throat at the moment and it seems to be the only thing that gives me joy when I'm in the high of it, just wondering if anyone has experienced blood sugar changes while taking this?

Finally if anyone out there has had glandular fever before please share your story :'(

(Additional- I'm on a pump and usually have good control)

I had glandular fever when I was about 23 years of age. First the bad news. It took the best part of 5 months to go away. I was constantly wiped out and barely had enough energy to raise a smile every morning. Now the better news. It didn't really adversely affect my diabetic control and my blood sugars remained pretty normal. There was no mention at the time of liver testing and I don't think that glandular fever and liver are related but it obviously best to ask your doctor about this. I feel it more than likely that your doctor is just taking extra care of you which really is no bad thing. I personally didn't take any pain medication for my throat if I remember correctly (it was about 25 years ago so please forgive me) I was just constantly exhausted and feeling really quite rubbish. I cannot therefore offer any advice regarding codeine and blood sugar control. Could you possibly check the patient information note in the box and see what that suggests? I hope things are ok for you. It is from memory a quite awful condition.

I had glandular fever when I was 21 and ended up in hospital with glandular fever associated hepatitis. Contrary to what Diabeticliberty says glandular fever and the liver can be related, I turned a not very flattering shade of yellow! Glandular fever hepatitis is rare, but I expect your GP is just being cautious. I can’t comment on any links with Diabetes as my GF pre-dates my diabetes diagnosis.
Hope you feel better soon x

I must have missed the "glandular fever" chapter in medical school. Or maybe we call it something else here? Sounds like some disease from Greek mythology lol.
EDIT: Is it what we call the mumps?

I think it’s called ‘Mono’ in the USA short for Mononucleosis?

Yes contrary to what Diabeticliberty says it does seem that glandular fever and liver function can in fact be related. Diabeticliberty's reply however only refers to his personal experience and he does clearly state that he had no liver function test. Perhaps his doctor served him short again but then he did have form for it.

I was told it’s not very common to get GF hepatitis, only about 5% of sufferers if I remember rightly so I guess not everyone gets liver function tests routinely

Thanks, it's mononucleosis, which is a virus. My daughter got it in high school. You often times get a swollen spleen. I don't think it commonly affects the liver though.
