Type 2 Glicrazide

Hi

Went to see the Sister at my Surgery for my Diabetic review. She was pleased with my control but asked me to stop taking Glicrazide because she was concerned about potential side affects. This left me with Sitigliptin to take with my evening meal.
I went along with this and the result was by bloods went from around 5 to 11, more than double. I have had good control for a long time have already had my Glicrazide reduced from two tablets to one some time ago.
I am now quite concerned and intend to return to the Surgery and see what can be done.
My Pharmacist was concerned as he had not heard of any problems with Glicrazide.
I would welcome any thoughts anyone may have.

Sulphonylurea type medications (of which Gliclazide is one) are capable of causing hypoglycemia.

I can only deduce at this point that your nurse thought your blood sugars were too low. You should absolutely go back and discuss this with the GP.
 
Thank you for your helpful reply, my plan is to check my bloods over the next couple of days and then make an appointment

I have been on gliclazide and sitagliptin. I would say sitagliptin is better for me because it hasn't caused me to gain weight and it hasn't caused me to have many lows. But check with your GP
 
Thanks for your reply, I haven’t had any lows, I will check this out early next week.

Hi @Shimmy ,

I'm not sure if you had you HbA1c done? (Which came back satisfactory.)
But as an insulin user myself to manage BGs, (in my experience.) some DSNs get "nervy" if it comes in lower than the "guidelines" & naturally assume it Is due to a lot of recuring lows? (Thus wishing to tweak meds..)

Certainly get back to your doctor..
 
Gliclazide increases inslin, this inslin forced your excess blood glocose into your liver. Hence when you stop Gliclazide your overfilled liver may dump this glocose into your blood.

You may find your BG improves over the next few days if you double down on limiting carbs. (Some of us also find Metformin useful as it reduces how much glocose the liver makes.)

Personally I don't think a BG of 11 for a few days is a big deal provided it starts to drop. If it does not start to drop show your GP a 7 day BG graph.
 
Hi. I'm not aware of any noticeable side effects with Gliclazide and it's taken by a large number of diabetics. The only 'side effect' is that it does it's job and stimulates insulin production hence you need to get the dosage right. BTW it only causes weight gain if you eat too many carbs; Gliclazide itself does not cause weight gain but it does stimulate insulin production which will metabolise the carbs.
 
Thank you, I have had my HBA1C done and as you thought it was fine. I will keep an eye on it for a couple of days and hopefully it will drop down to an acceptable level

Can you define "fine" ...many of us disagree with our doctors about what "fine" is.
