I had to see the surgery diabetes doctor yesterday and came away feeling browbeaten. She is insistent that I start on GLP-1 injections, her reasoning is that my HbA1c is 'still' 90 after five weeks and I'm not losing 'sufficient' weight.

My counter was that it was too soon for my A1c to reflect how I was doing since diagnosis, my daily average is 6.5 or below, and that being 3Kg lighter was still losing weight.

It almost felt like she had an agenda and I was being bullied into it. I don't know, GLP-1 might be the best thing in the world for all I know.

Anyway, sorry for the bit of a rant there. If anyone is taking GLP-1 or knows anything about it in relation to T2 I'd be grateful.

Thanks :)

Please don't let her bully you. Are you saying only 5 weeks between the HbA1c's? That is ridiculous. Of course most of that will be before you were diagnosed. The gap should be 3 months. Sorry, I know nothing about the injections.

I haven't, although she was persistent. Yes my first reading was 8th March, then they took another a week or so back, so she is off her rocker. I think I'm going to ask that the hospital clinic deals with me in the future.

May I ask the result of your A1c when it was higher than 90, please? And I agree with Bluetit, 5 weeks is really only a little longer than an A1c done to confirm diagnosis, not nearly long enough to see improvement.

I have just found the original letter the hospital gave me (I lose things). I quote -
"His CBG was 20.1, with raised ketones (but no acidaemia), and an HBAC1C of 112. A diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes was therefore made."

Well your GP is an idiot then! You’ve got your HbA1c down by over 20 points in a few weeks, that’s a brilliant achievement and she should know that, she obviously doesn’t understand how the HbA1c works. Can you request to see a different GP at your surgery?

That is a good improvement! Very similar to my own weeks after diagnosis. My Diabetes Nurse had threatened that at the next appt I would be on insulin and that I would have no choice in the matter.
Well, I sent her a great big Raspberry!

Carry on with what you are doing, keep testing, keep checking labels and keep learning. If you do indeed need extra medication then this should be your decision taking into account your doctor's advice.

I lost, on average, 4 points from my Hba1c each week starting from diagnosis until I was no longer in the diabetic range and then about 2 point a month until I reached normal levels - so you are on track to do that. I suspect that doctors are all to eager to medicate rather than restore normality.

I normally see a very good GP, but she is the 'dedicated' diabetes doctor. I will have a word with my usual GP when I next see him.

Thank you all. If it wasn't for finding you all here I'd be at the mercy of some of these people, and I think I'd be pretty messed up by now.
