Hi

As a happy accident, while waiting for a heart bypass, a diabetic specialist person at the hospital has got their teeth into me due to them not being happy with my hba1c.

They connected to my libre and are watching me, im in daily phone calls and emails with two people now, no idea who they are really but both seem nice and also clever so im going along with it.

The lady has also been speaking to a consultant of god knows what speciality, she is calling tommorow to ask me some questions, teach me to carb count (this wont be hard as I spent years on lchf diet) but she also suggested maybe trying me on GLP 1 I think but now ive been trying to read up a bit, maybe she said SGLT 2, I know its dumb that im not sure but as far as I can tell they do the same thing?

Does anyone have opinions on if they are good to take? Useful? Dangerous? Etc...

Thankyou

Hi. If the consultant was talking about SGLT2 inhibitors then the Jardiance you were having is one of the 'Gliflozins' family of drugs. These drugs reduce the amount of glucose re-absorbed in the intestine so more is excreted. The GLP1 inhibitors which are the 'Glutide' family e.g. Bydureon etc alter the speed that food goes thru the bowel and hence the amount of glucose absorbed. GLP1s are taken by injection I believe once a week. Both drugs are normally used for a T2 with excess weight yet you say you have low-carbed previously (but not now?). Bydureon can have side effects and worth avoiding if there are alternative solutions. I know nothing about the Gliflozins which are relatively new. Is there no way you can seriously reduce the carbs in your diet, adjusting the insulin accordingly to bring weight and HBA1C into line? BTW carb-counting normally for us means adjusting the Bolus insulin at each meal for the carbs being eaten. It can also mean counting the carbs you are going to eat at each meal to control the daily total.
