Hi all just been diagnosed with type 2 and on metformin once a, day... Wondering if I need to purchase a blood testing machine or not?..

Yes, so you know how foods or which foods affect your levels. There are few T2s that will recommend affordable meters and strips. I think either Tee2 or codefree meters and their strips are affordable

I would suggest you do I found it essential for gaining control otherwise your flying blind.

I would never be where I am now, that is with non diabetic blood sugars, if I didn’t have a blood glucose meter to tell me which food I can and can’t tolerate.

Here’s some info on meters, and to be clear I have no commercial connections with any of the companies mentioned. For a meter with cheap strips go for the Tee2 + found here:

http://spirit-healthcare.co.uk/product/tee2-plus-blood-glucose-meter/ with the strips found here:

With more expensive strips is the Caresens Dual which I currently use, this one has the advantage of glucose and ketone testing in one machine, it’s to be found here:

And to be totally transparent I used to use the SD Code Free which has the cheapest strips available. However I found it to be becoming less and less reliable. Here it is for anyone wanting to give it a go:

and here for the extra strips

http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/sd-codefree-test-strips-to-be-used-only-with-the-sd-monitor/

There are discount codes if you buy in bulk.

5 packs 264086

10 packs 975833

Don’t forget to check the box that you have diabetes so you can buy VAT free. (for all meters and strips)

If you do not have a meter to test your bgl with, you will never have full control of T2 diabetes.

Thank you all for reply its only cos I asked the nurse and she said no not until your first 2 month blood test to see how you getting on with metformin in case it needs adjusting, I suffer from abstuctive sleep aphnea as well I wonder if this can affect my blood sugers aswell its all confusing at moment I got no info of what 2 do next, except wait 2 months..

Zak, if you are proactive with your diet and watching your blood sugars you can have made a big improvement in two months and may not need an increase in meds. Sleep apnea may improve if you have weight to lose. I didn’t suffer with it but lost a shed load of weight very easily by low carbing. You are right though poor sleep can contribute to high blood sugar levels.
