Glucose tolerance test.

Hello all,

Last year my GP carried out a string of blood tests on me one of which was diabetes. Everything came back fine with no problems.

However, a few weeks ago, my GP requested another blood test only this time fasting over night for 12 hours.

I've been feeling ill for a few months now, generally tired and fatigued and so I only got the test carried out on wednesday of last week.
On saturday, I recieved a letter from my GP advising me to tnow make an appointment for a glucose Tolerance test.

Naturally, I was quite alarmed seeing as last years results were fine.

I dont have any of the 'normal' symptoms of diabetes except for tiredness, itching and sore tired eyes. All of these I had attributed to one of my other ailments. (I have a list of health problems including hypothyroidism, compartment syndrome, osteoporosis, cancer....blah..blah..blah!!)

I also have a few other symptoms that I wondered whether they could be related. I have been suffering from a lot boils on various parts of my body. (none of which are down to lack of hygene, I hasten to add) and a sore on my leg that refuses to heal.
I've also noticed that I have been sweating from my head a whole lot more upon slight exertion, but had put that down to the menopause.

I would never expect anyone on here to diagnose whether I have diabetes or not, but just wondered if these were the type of symptoms that might be related to a diabetic condition?

I am petrified that I might now be diagnosed with diabetes becasue I have a very poor appetite and am a strict vegetarian.

Any advice will be very gratefully recieved and I thank you inadvance for your help.

Thank you,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer.
Welcome to the Forum.

The symptoms you describe CAN be down to Diabetes but also many other things. That's why you must get a proper diagnosis. You can worry yourself sick by surfing the Net and trying to 'second guess' your GP. Not recommended.

If you do end up with some form of Diabetes or even pre-Diabetes, then you will get all the help and support you need here.

Let us know how you get on.

Vegetarians get diabetes as well!

I know because I am both.

It sounds like your Doc. is on the ball, that's good for you, let him / her do the job and diagnose you.

Then if you are diabetic come and ask some questions.

Thank you both very, very much for your replies.

Do you get the feeling that I'm panicking a bit?? Ha Ha!!

Sorry, when I said that I am a strict vegetarian, I didnt mean that us veggies dont get diabetes. I just meant that my diet is poor because I am a strict vegetarian and dont eat as well or as often/ regularly as I ought to. I get bouts of where I suddenly get very weak and shaky as if my blood sugar has plummeted into my boots.

I didnt know that there was such a condition as pre-diabetes? Mind you, I suppose it makes sense really.

I am defiantely trying to leave the diagnosing upto my GP. He is very good and very caring and does appear to be on the ball. It is hard though isnt it? This has come totally out of the blue and has really got my spooked!!

I promise, I will book the GTT and wont look up any more symptoms.

Thank you again. I really do appreciate your replies. You have set my mind at ease.

Love Jennifer

Jennifer........panic ? Whatever gave you that idea ???

It's all new and confusing, so take a few steps back and relax....... 8)

We can help you sort everything out whatever the outcome. As for pre-Diabetes that just means that you are heading the way of a Diabetic and could stop or delay that happening by changing lifestyle and/or diet. Simple steps which could avoid being a Diabetic.

Bit more complex than that really but, no offence meant.......I'm keeping it simple. :)
