Glucose Tolerance Test

Turning out to be a bad news thread for you, isn't it

All Bran has an awful lot of sugar in it.

From http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/en_GB/all-bran-original.html

per 100 g; 48g of carbohydrates 18g sugar 30g starch.

So 48% carbohydrate - I know it spikes me through the roof which is a shame because I used to like it as a breakfast cereal.

Never mind, have bacon and eggs instead.

Cheers

Yeah it sure looks that way.I have the All bran as fibre to keep me regular and it sure does lol.

I have bacon anyways on a friday dinner time but its microwaved not fried.

More bad news......

....a McDonalds breakfast is not what we are calling a 'fry up'. In a diabetic fry up you don't have the muffin or the hash brown. Both are carbohydrates.

The cappucino is also likely to be high carb. 10g of carbs in a medium cup, all sugar.

If you eat in McDonalds you can do pretty well as long as you leave the bun, don't have fries or hash browns or any other starchy add-on, and drink unsweetened coffee, tea, or plain water.

Most commercial food outlets make their profit on the cheap bulk carbohydrates they use to pad out the meals.

Yeah they do a brekfast without the bun theres round sausage and scranbled egg and trouble is they put a hash brown on the plate and a bun but im sure they could leave the hash brown off and put an extra bacon rasher on or sumat.

I gotta get plenty carbs at the moment anyways for that glucose tolerance test im having done on weds morning.so on the menue tomorrow is bread at dinner time and jacket spud for tea and monday is all bran for brekkie and sarnies for dinner and canaloni for tea and tuesday sarnies for dinner and bangers and mash for tea.Now that little lot should be ideal for the test.

I feel an enormous amount of sympathy for where you are at the moment.

When I was first diagnosed I started out doing all the wrong things with the best of intentions.
I started out on what was accepted as 'healthy'.
Big bowl of muesli for breakfast with plenty of fresh fruit (wrong).
Loads of fruit juice because it is a healthy drink (wrong).
Plenty of wholemeal bread with grains in (wrong).
Cut down on the fats (wrong).
'Healthy' diet plate with plenty of carbs (wrong).

It has taken me about five years to really get a grip on what I should be doing, and what I should be eating.
The good news is that since I have mainly sorted my diet (nobody is perfect) I have lost a good deal of weight and my BG readings are now pre-diabetic.

So brace yourself for a long struggle to adjust your life style - it is always straightforward in hind sight but very confusing when you start out.
You have to accept that a lot of the advice on the NHS and Diabetes UK sites (not this diabetes.co.uk one) is lagging behind current best information.

My personal aim - to get my weight down to the mid range of 'normal' BMI.
I thought it would be easy as I dropped from 13 stone to 12 stone without much effort.
The last 7 lbs are a killer, though :-(

Thanks for that.Yes i realise its gunna be a long hard struggle.Nothing in life is ever that straight forward. If it was it wouldnt be fun would it.We strive to make a healthier and better life and to try and live longer.I gave up smoking in January 2013 that was a hard step and already my body is feeling healthier. Now i need to loose some weight and increase my life span even more.Wednesday's test will be the start of a new chapter for me.Wether it reveals yes i am diabetic or no im not (hopefully the latter) ill still need to sit down with the diabetic nurse and thrash out a new healthier regime i guess.Id like to get down from currently being around 95kg to a healthier say 70kg.

Don't be too surprised if your diabetic nurse tells you
Don't test BG
Eat lots of carbs and make them half your plate
Eat low fat
This is what most of us are told, because it is NHS party line.

Of course it is also based on outdated and debunked medical research, but you can't expect a huge institution to keep up with recent dietary research, can you?

And then we each face the dilemma - obey NHS guidelines and risk high BG, complications and steady deterioration - or follow the suggestion of strangers on an Internet forum, who tell you to eat fat and avoid so called 'healthy' foods, but who claim they have their BG under control and are slowing or halting the onset of complications...

Not an easy decision!

Yeah id be expecting the diabetic nurse to advise me to make cut backs even if its proved im not diabetic.I know id still have to take steps to avoid becoming diabetic for sure.

If you want a piece of advice.
If the food industry and all the media and adverts say it is 'healthy'. Then it's not for prediabetics or diabetics!

Low fat is more sugar and carbs! Low sugar is more sugar and carbs!

You need to realise that everything changes when you are diagnosed.

Yeah the food industry would have us believe nothing is safe to eat anymore.

Have been for the test and come ome for some dinner. It went ok was a little boring but i soon passed the 2 hours and now im gunna wait till next week and ring the docs and see what the results were.Fingers crossed its all ok.Another half hour and im off again to see the consultant this time and see what the CT scan revealed.Hopefully nothing sinister..

The results came back and sadly im diabetic.Off to see the diabetic nurse next Thursday morning.
Sorry to hear it.

Up until now, it probably hasn't quite hit home - but over the next few days and weeks after diagnosis most of us go through a strange period of adjustment with lots of mood swings and a whole range of emotions (denial, grief, anger, hopelessness, etc.). It may take a while.

For me, finding out about diabetes was the best way forward. I read 'diabetes for dummies' by a doctor, which explained 10x better than a GP ever has time to do. And 'bloodsugar101' which examines all the recent medical breakthroughs and how to make lifestyle and diet changes to delay deterioration.

Stick around. The forum can help a lot.

Thanks for that.Yeah im slowly coming to terms with it but im also postive with the reading of 6.3 i got yesterday evening that it could be controlled with tablets or diet.Thats a good reading really.

Yeah the forum is pretty good.
