Glucose tolerance test

Type of diabetes
Type 1
Treatment type
Insulin
When I met with the midwife a few weeks ago, she was talking me through all the various tests and scans they would be doing in the coming months - what they were looking for on the ultrasounds, blood tests etc. She then mentioned the glucose tolerance test.

I laughed and said "well, no need for that one is there? We already know how well I tolerate that!" She looked blankly at me and said that I would still need to have it.

Am I being a moron? I thought that this test was to pick up if someone has gestational diabetes, which as I'm type 1 already is a bit redundant. Is there something else they are looking for when they do this? And if I did do the test, do I take insulin for it?

U don't need it no they put it on my blood form and I argued I did t need it , my DNS is getting r ally annoyed with the midwifed theat keep saying diabetics need gtts

You definitely don't need it! What's it going to do send your blood sugars soaring...
Ummm you already know you are diabetic.
I think some midwives just don't understand type 1 at all.
(Sorry extreme sarcasm meant there!!)

Thankyou all, you have given me the confidence to refuse this - I think the midwife has just not dealt with many preexisting diabetics so was just going through the motions, rather than thinking about why a test was given.

My midwife said I needed a GTT too. I made a disbelieving "Er.............!" noise and unclipped my pump from my belt whereupon she looked embarrassed and changed what she was saying to "Um...but obviously you don't need one of those because you're diabetic already".

I think many midwives are unfamiliar with Type 1 and go on auto-pilot.

Check they do know you're type 1 and understand what that is. I tried a different hospital for a pregnancy i miscarried and at my 1st appt she told me what to expect and i kept on asking don't you do growth scans etc so she went to check and came back in a panic to say i needed to see the drs. I did, then miscarried then received an invitation for a gtt basis my hba1c of 5.6. There were other issuesto but following this i returned to my 1st hospital for future pregnancies. Never assume they know what they're doing!
