Going abroad for the first time (to Rome) with my relatively recently diagnosed daughter (11). I'm getting the letter from the Doctor, etc. Any advice?

Take twice as much of everything as you think you'll need - test strips, insulin, etc.

Be prepared to do extra blood tests. I always find being abroad and sightseeing seems to put me lower than usual (probably all the walking) so always carry plenty of hypo treatments too.

Enjoy your holiday :)

Buy loads of dextrose tablets because you don't need to worry about getting them through security. Check if there's a fridge in the room to keep insulin cool, and buy a frio wallet for when you're out and about (I don't know what temp Rome is this time of year). Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and make sure to take all the emergency numbers and he EHIC card

Also split your daughters diabetes supplies between yourself and a travelling companion, that way if one bag goes missing she still has enough to go with.

It's also a good idea to take a copy of her repeat prescription, this way if you do need any supplies in Rome you can present this to a Dr or Pharmacist.

Have a great time and stay safe:)

Thanks!

Noblehead beat me to it, as said take at least twice as much as you think she'll need, put half in one carry on bag and half in another.

Don't get too wound up if whilst on holiday her control is a bit off - change of climate, food & routine will all have an affect, but it is a holiday after all so roll with it and enjoy.

Make sure any insulin is with you in carry on luggage, don't check it in - the hold is too cold for it.

Rome is a wonderful place, I went there a few years ago and had an amazing time, so make sure you enjoy your holiday even if her control goes a bit off the beaten track with all the changes!
