Going in for a test after odd readings - Pls advise

Hi, I'm new to this forum and would really appreciate some insight. I've always had blood sugar issues since childhood but more to do with feeling very hypo when I'm hungry. I never looked into it as I have been used to feeling that way.

However, I recently bought a glucometer after reading Dr. Datis Kharrazian's book. I took a reading after eating 1 boiled plantain with no fat added, for breakfast. I reached 14.4 in one hour and 6.9 in two hours. Then I got down to 3.7 at 3 hours. It looks like I have reactive hypoglycemia but my one hour number was so high

I have booked an appointment for a test. At first the doc ordered a fasting glucose test but I told him it wouldn't show anything abnormal as I've been testing my fasting AM glucose and I'm either normal or a little hypo. He then ordered the test where I drink the Lucozade, forget the name. Thing is they test at 2 hours and I was reading online that recent research shows that the 1 hour mark is where the most accurate diagnosis for diabetes is made. Could he misdiagnose me? I'm so confused!

Thank you so much for your help.

p.s. my mum is T2

Hi Goodvibes and welcome to the forum :) The most important thing is to get your test results from your doctor so you know what's what. I can help you by giving you some general advice. First some basic information on managing diabetes which would be useful if you were diagnosed diabetic or if you are pre-diabetic which could help prevent you from becoming full-blown diabetic. This information was written by the Forum Monitors and would also be useful even if you turned out not to be diabetic at all:

Secondly as you mention hypos, this is more advice about hypos which you might find helpful:

Good luck with your test :) Let us know what the doctor says.

Thank you so very much daisy1, I will go through those links tonight.

I was just reading on diabetes.org about the WHO and the changes made to diagnosing diabetes. I don't know if this is outdated as it says it was implemented June 2000, but it says they are looking for a 2 hour value of 11.1. Is this still what they do? A random test of 11.1 is also mentioned for diagnosis. If I reached 14.4 at any random test does that make me diabetic?

Sorry for all of the questions!

Its a:
Glucose tolerance test is in which glucose is given and blood samples taken afterward to determine how quickly it is cleared from the blood.
The test is can be used to test for diabetes, insulin resistance, and reactive hypoglycemia

Try not to worry too much, Goodvibes. Boiled plantain contains 28.5g carb per 100g, which would send anyone's bg up 1 hour after eating. You were within the target range for non-diabetic 2 hours after eating it (less than 8mmol/l 2 hrs after meals - National Institute for Clinical Health Guidelines).

Wait for your GTT results. If you are diabetic, you've caught it early and can get in control of it. If you're not - read around here and make sure you NEVER become diabetic - at least, not Type 2.

Let us know what happens

Viv :D

Thank you Viv!! I'll let you know what happens next week. I'm happy that at least I am growing aware and can make positive changes. I hope you are all doing great and thanks again :D

I got diagnosed with T2 on Friday. I am happy that I at least know what I am dealing with and I'm taking the time to do lots of reading and research. Thanks so much for all who offered support. Right now I'm reading Dr. Bernstein's 'Diabetes Solution'. I'm already on a low-carb diet and I'm keeping a close track of my sugar levels. I'll have a good read around this great forum!
