Going Keto

Keah

Hi, I live in the UK. I would like to try managing my type 1 diabetes with the keto diet and I have two questions I am hoping you can help me with please. I inject insulin (NHS won't fund me a pump), so I am guessing I will need to change my rapid acting insulin (I currently use NovoRapid), and if so, which slow acting insulin would you recommend that is funded by the NHS please? And, then, if you are using a slow acting insulin, when do you inject? At the beginning of the meal, afterwards?
Until I get a slow acting insulin, is there a method people use to manage eating keto with using NovoRapid, or is it impossible? I currently use levemir insulin as my basal, injecting morning and night. Is this ok to stay on or is there another basal insulin people use when eating keto? Lots of questions! I look forward to hearing your advice please! Thanks!

There is no reason why you can't continue using the same insulins (if they work for you) just because you change your diet, you should just need to change the amounts - do you carb count? Do you know how to adjust your doses depending on what you're eating?

I believe @Mel dCP follws a low carb/keto diet so may be able to help.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I carb count, but I am worried about the rapid insulin being used up before the high fat/protein meal has finished digesting so my blood sugars would then start to rise. Whereas, a slower acting insulin would carry on and cover the meal much better. I know Dr B uses a slow acting insulin but it isn't available in the UK, so wondered what people use here so I can ask to swap over to it.

Have a search for Dr Ian Lake. He’s a keto T1 and an excellent source of information.

My suggestion is to be extremely diligent with your plans, either via an app or spreadsheet.

If you are doing a clean version of Keto with whole foods it may be easier to get consistency. Keto is a broad-ish church, but you will have to tune to your particular requirements and reactions.
