Hi , Its that time of year again when we all think about trying to loose some weight after the indulgences of the festive period, the problem i have got, is that everytime i try to go on a lower fat diet, my blood sugar levels plumit and i hypo a lot. Im worried about bringing my insulin intake down as i have tried this before and end up with my levels running high which isnt doing me any good, has anybody got any suggestions ???? . Im a type 1 on 42 units of levamir on a night time and novorapid injections when required,

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Don't just take my word for it! Here's an extract from a study published last year:

Evidence
from this systematic review demonstrates that low-carbohydrate/high-protein
diets are more effective at 6 months and are as effective, if not more, as low-fat
diets in reducing weight and cardiovascular disease risk up to 1 year.

If you want to lose fat and keep control of your BS, a low-fat diet isn't the way to do it despite the fortunes to be made telling people that it is.

All the best,

fergus

Hi Paul
I've not lost as much weight as Fergus, but I've done quite well. Low carb is the way.

Low fat diets are a disaster as they usually replace the "nasty" fats with carbs - which for us are an order of magnitude nastier.

I'm not an insulin user so can't say why you are getting hypos with (presumably) more carbs, one thing that can happen is that the lack of fat causes the carbs to turn into blood glucose a lot quicker, which for me means my naturally generated insulin is insufficient and I go high, then the insulin production continues and drives me low. If this is happening to you then I suspect your ratios need some adjustment.

Have a look round the How To's here

most people seem to find they become a lot more controllable on a low/reduced carb diet but you will obviously need to reduce your insulin to match

Sounds like you have become overmedicated for your current carb consumption (this is not uncommon)

The A answer would be to reduce your meds so this doesn't happen.

Meantime the B answer would be to eat more carbs, maybe a snack between meals would help even things out, or some glucose tabs or orange juice (not too much) which would work quickly. Standard "hypo treatment" for Type 1s is 15g glucose and test after 15 minutes, for some Type 2s this may overtreat though.

Hi everyone havnt been on line for a while.Good news is i have lost nearly two stone.I have been type 1 for 38 years this year and was like a skeleton when i got diagnose at the age of 17.As soon as i got taken to hospital (you were kept in then for about two weeks till stabilised)i was really upset because my jeans would not fasten up and i had put on about 1 stone in two weeks.I came home and cried and my parents were upset because i said i was not going to inject myself no more.I only weighed about 7 stone anyway and started going really thin before i was diagnosed and weighed 5 stone when i got taken in hospital. But when i came back home i was about 9 stone and kept putting weight on.Anyway to cut a long story short i learnt a lot in them days.I now weigh 10 stone but that is great because last year i was 11 stone and was upset again. The reason is i eat as much protein and veg as i want but only take 6 units of novorapid with each meal only a small amount of carbohydrate and 10 units of lantus at bedtime.so i am made up with my weight lost
