Hey everyone I'm going to university in September and I will be living in the uni halls and I am a type 1 diabetic for now 5 years and obviously at uni people will be drinking and parting so I'm a little bit worried about my blood sugar levels as I don't have the best control as sometimes I can be good and then be really bad and I've ended up in hospital for it. So if there is anyone with advice of what I could do it would be great Meeks xx

Hi. Very difficult I guess. Obviously you need to control the amount of insulin and not binge drink. I assume you are on Basal/Bolus so do be careful with the amount of Bolus before drinking and have lower-GI carbs with some fat etc to provide slow absorption to avoid excessive swings?

Hey, I'm at uni too, though going into my fourth year in September. I was only diagnosed in march whilst on placement year, so haven't actually had to get used to managing it at uni just yet, though if you have questions about uni in general feel free to ask :) I would be careful to try and not drink tons, or make sure you have something decent to eat before bed. Make sure at least a couple people in your flat are aware of your condition, and if you've been drinking I would probably leave your door unlocked at night in case anyone needs to get to you. Is there anything in particular that's concerning you?

One of the girls my son shared accommodation with at Uni was type 1 and she explained to him and a couple of others what to do. (I'm type 2 so he'd never seen a hypo or anything previously). They all just kept an eye out and he said he learned to recognise when she heading for a hypo cos she started talking gibberish.

If you want to have a good night then always carry testing kit, dextrose and insulin. That way hopefully you will always have what you need to control your sugar levels.
Remember to eat before drinking and also remember alcohol might affect you the next day (it always makes my sugar low).

Another thing to consider is getting your own mini fridge to stores insulin in - I kept it in my room in my first year, so there was no risk of anything happening to it/ drunk people taking it.

I can't attach files here, but if you Google "diabetes at university" the first result should be a PDF about starting uni. I read it a while back and it was really useful

Hi Meeks,
I am type 1 diabetic and spent 4 years in college. No problem with college and college life as long as you stick by the rules of diabetes. It can be a challenge at times but friends will understand if you explain about your condition. Diabetics achieve better grades and are more committed to study. Stick with it as it can only get better. Think of proportions and priority.
