Hi there. I am Type 1 and considering trying a low carb diet. Can anyone recommend a good book or reference material (beside this great forum!). Paul.

Have a look at Atkins Diabetes Revolution, by Dr M C Vernon and J A Eberstein, published by Thorsons.

You don't have to start at extreme low carb (less than 30g per day) if you don't want to. As a Type 1 you'd know better than I whether or not to reduce your carbs so drastically - and how to do it. I'm Type 2 and have never had a problem with it - I stay at 'Induction Phase' level almost all the time.

One thing that people miss about Atkins - the more carbs you eat, the less fat. As you increase your carbs from induction, so you decrease the fat.

For T1? The sub title is 'The A groundbreaking Aproach to Preventing and Controlling T2 diabetes.'
It's not my favourite regime but Bernsteins books describe a very low carb approach to T1. (that is less than 30g carb a day). You can read a fair amount on line (just google)

Sorry, Phoenix! I always forget that it says that. However - page 6:

" Because Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common type of diabetes, and because it can be prevented and treated through diet and lifestyle changes, it will be the focus of this book. Though some of the advice in this book can be helpful for people with Type 1 diabetes as well, in general . . . we are referring to Type 2 diabetes."

However, if anyone is going to low-carb, I think it's worth a look, but rather borrow it from the library than buy a copy - or get a cheap one off the internet.

I put my second paragraph in because, being Type 2, I am ignorant of how a Type 1 would cope with the Induction Phase, or if they should even ever go so low. Nevertheless, I think the book, Chapters 10 - 17 particularly, is a good description of a low-carb diet and how to go about it, and for that reason, is worth a read by anyone who is interested in low-carb.

i have just ordered collins little gem book for carb counting, and another book called low carb diets for dummies , im sure i will learn a lot from them. will keep you posted about how it goes x

There is a book entitled 'The Diabetes Revolution' by Dr Stephen Clarke - it's available on Amazon for under £7. Its quite easy to get through and explains everything very well and includes sections for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

I bought the collins little gem carb counter book but after finding a couple of mis prints I have lost confidence in it. I assume it is mis prints but please correct me if I am wrong.

page 116-cappuccino per mug 136.7g! (surely can't be this much when page 95 states milk is 11.3g per 250ml)
Much as I enjoy a cappuccino I'd rather have the equivalent in bars of chocolate @ approx 25g per bar:evil:
page 79-cream crackers each 0.7g -I specificaly went out to buy them and couldn't find any below 5g each (jacob's and own brand makes) :(
page 177-bonbons are 20-21g per 25g unless you want strawberry flavoured which are 103.8g!!! :o

I wouldn't bother with a book, just look at the recipies that Whitby Jet has posted on this forum.

The Collins Gem book does have some inaccuracies, but it has the advantage of being portable. If you're buying manufactured food, always check the labels as well.

Much more accurate is the Calorie Carb & Fat Bible 2011 but it's hardly portable, being a very comprehensive book. I keep that for cross-checking, but use the Collins one for every-day. There'll be a new edition of the CCFB out in January, probably, for 2012.

I've a book here and made several dishes from it, keep coming back to it so it must have something going for it, its called...

The Big Book of Low-Carb Recipes
ISBN 1844831388

I have had many low carbs books in the past but I often find them confusing and contradictory. Many are not that low carb. I now just read tho forum for info and look out on these forums and the internet for recipes.
I think it's safer to do that. I have lost confidence in some books. If you are not diabetic there are not the consequences to getting it wrong when the recipe is incorrect.
