Good enough?

Diagnosed in September last year I have been working on controlling my diabetes with diet and exercise. Last HbA1c in Dec down from 85 to 46. Average before meals is now 6.3 and after 7.9 giving an overall average of 6.8. Oddly exercise seems to send my BG up rather than down and it stays there for several hours. My first reading each day is always about 6.5 to 8.0. It never gets below 5.0 before a meal. Are these results good enough? Should I be trying to get it lower? If so any suggestions on how, especially the first reading of the day? All advice greatly appreciated. I have learnt so much here. :) Thank you all

If you are doing anaerobic or very high intensity exercise then your BG levels will rise. I have been struggling with this lately and have started taking a half unit of insulin during exercise to keep my levels down. Seems to be doing the trick. I'm T1.

Your doing very well having only been diagnosed in September and if your HbA1C is 46 then I say keep on keeping on with what you're doing now :)

Thank you Scardoc for replying to me. I will just keep trying. I hoped that there would be further improvement but maybe that is not possible. The Doctor is keen for me to take Metformin but I would like to stay off drugs for as long as I can. I realise that I will have to take them at some point. Thanks again :)

Sounds like your doing really really well considering your very recently diagnosed. Keep it up chuck, your doing great

Thank you for your encouragement Faith. It was really hard when I did not know what to do and got such conflicting advice. This forum has been wonderful and I am grateful to all who have helped and encouraged me. Just wish I could get the early day (fasting) reading down a bit. :)

I try to please everyone and have some carbs with most meals albeit smaller portions but what I have found is that if I have no carbs in the evening my morning reading is much lower.

My main meal is midday so the evening meal is more of a snack so only having some chicken or whatever is not a problem.

My before breakfast readings have been 6.9 or so in the past but just 5.4 this morning after following my own advice last evening and a few evenings before that.

Hi. Well done. I wouldn't worry too much about early morning readings as they can be affected by overnight liver dumps of glucose (Dawn Phenomenon). Just do the 2 hours after a meal checks. The next HBa1C will give you good overview.

Thank you both for your suggestions. I have been told that the next HbA1c will not be until January next year as they only do them once a year, so a while to wait. In the meantime I'll try your suggestions and keep testing. I can now have 50 strips per month which is better than none. I was originally told that type 2 diabetics do not need to test so I could not have a prescription, so I won that round.
Thanks again for your help. :)
