Interesting article as I have had ulcerative colitis for 50+ years and diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 16 years ago first 6 on diet only then metformine makes you think!

Do you have a link to the article you're talking about @KPJ ? :) Do you mean the News one here?

Interesting . I have recently posted a thread on this forum under ask a question about gut flora and insulin resistance which was generated because I had watched a BBC programme on Monday night A doctor in the house where a young lad's lack of diversity of gut flora was said to be the cause of insulin resistance .
Your post is really interesting as a couple of years ago I was diagnosed with mild ulcerative colitis , I was unable to tolerate the drugs and my consultant suggested Aloe Vera and very lucky for me it put the UC into remission. After an accident I had a HbA1C test while my UC was not under control and about a year later just before an operation I had one ( which covered part of the 3 month period for the HbA1c when it was under control and the (HbA1c) fell 40% even though I had not changed my diet and take no meds apart from Aloe Vera.
My view is that for me there is a relationship between UC and higher blood sugars.

hey well would you suggest aloe vera for people with inflamations in gut areas ?
do you think aloe vera can lower blood glucose in general ?

I think that the aloe vera assisted as the gut ( flora? ) started working better healing the ulcers and as a result that reduced the blood sugar . I not sure it would help anyone who did not have my condition, as aloe vera only helps some people with ulcerative colitis .
I would not recommend aloe vera as helping with blood sugars I do not know how it might react with any diabetic meds ( as I take none ). However I think that the interaction of gut flora and other illnesses is potentially an interesting line of research.

Metformin directly affecting gut microbes is very interesting to me as a type 1 diabetic.

I'm going to try taking it for this exact purpose.

Very much so. There is a link between stomach ulcers and bacteria called Heliobactor Pylori.

I put this to the test - I tested my bloods after a cup of latte with 65g of carbs per 100g. I mixed my prebiotic in the latte and tested after 90 mins - my blood sugar was 5.5 - the lowest it has ever been - I know this is a one-off, but I was amazed.
