I'm dying to get back to the gym, but my team are telling me I can't. I've lost all the muscle I spent a year and a half building, meagre though it was I worked hard for it! At the gym twice a day sometimes. The aches and pains constantly were all for those small gains, I lost 2/3 stone in weight and I had little fat, with DKA, I'm currently 66kg at 6 3, having put on 6kg since Xmas Eve but not noticeably except my ribs don't look like a xylophone anymore! I got rushed into hospital and diagnosed with type one Xmas Eve with DKA, sent out and met my nurse and dietician last week and again this week. I had just about gotten happy with how I looked (ish), less like a 12 year old boy lol. I might be putting the cart before the horse but I feel I could get rid of some of my pent up anger and stress I seem to have constantly atm at the gym as well.

I had a busy, hectic life prior to my illnesses, viruses, surprising tear jerkingly painful cyst and finally being diagnosed-full time work, single dad and family business on the side, I rarely sit down! And I'm cursing my luck a lot atm tbh! I've been horrible and snippy with various people recently, medical staff, family and friends, and that really isn't me in the slightest. I just need an outlet atm I think, I don't deal well and my normal way of dealing-getting drunk then dealt with isn't really an option (obviously I don't have my daughter for the drunk part! God bless grandparents lol).
Sorry pity party me lol

Hi, sorry to hear that you're not having the best time. Getting used to everything and doing the things you enjoy aren't easy at first. If you aren't allowed to go to the gym atm, I'd recommend going for a run or a brisk walk? Something that'll make you feel better and you should be able to do. :)

Hi. I'm a bit surprised at the gym ban and would insist on knowing why. There may be a good reason due to the DKA but you need to have a discussion to understand the reasons and when you can start again. Once you understand the risks if any you can decide what is the best way forward with regard to exercise. I'm interested in what the dietician's advice was?

My sympathies.
If it's any consolation, I've found it far quicker to regain strength and muscle than it was to gain it the first time round, even after long gaps, and I've heard many others say the same.
As you were probably running low on insulin for a while before diagnosis it could have been slowing your progress for some time, and I expect when you are well enough to get back in the gym you'll be able to bulk back up surprisingly fast (watch out for stretch marks!).
I seem to remember seeing another conversation on this forum recently about how injected insulin can actually be more anabolic than natural endogenous insulin, because it circulates more through the muscles first instead of going straight to the liver (I'd love to see some studies on this if anyone has more info.)

I find regular lifting a massive help keeping balanced, both glucose-wise and mentally. I've also been away from the gym the last few days with flu, and am really missing it!

Thanks everyone, wasn't happy when I wrote my post lol. My dietician is the one who banned me from the gym! She said go for a walk or do some resistance stuff, I like my food, although I'm being careful atm until I fully get carb counting-not risen over 10 since I started Monday ;), and I'm not looking to pile on weight, so I was hoping to build up muscle, keep the fat off and enjoy my food, within reason lol-gym seemed the perfect way...
