I am an 18 year old male and have type 1 diabetes. I enjoy wrestling and going to the gym but have not been able to since quarantine. Recently they reopened but I’m not sure if it’s safe to go back yet because of COVID-19. Do any of you have suggestions or opinions on this matter? Many thanks in advance.

Ask your GP or diabetes team for advice. I contacted my GP last week and they've signed me off mine.

I'm going back to the gym next week, ours is now requiring pre booking so I plan to just swim for the first couple of weeks whilst waiting to see if the weights room has an outbreak...

Hi. I am a trainer and work in a gym. Your gym should be advising you on what hygiene precautions they are using. All the gyms I know i.e. my local ones and the one I work in, have stringent numbers allowed and a strict cleaning routine plus social distancing in place.
On top of this I would suggest that you are at very very low risk of a) catching this virus b) being harmed by it. I would suggest you are more likely to harm your health by NOT exercising!
A study of those who died of CoVid in hospital and with diabetes type 1 and 2 (Professor P Kar et al May 2020 NHS report) showed a death rate of 0.5-0.6 per 100,000 people in your age group (0-39) so I'd suggest conquering your fears and getting back to the gym. Also note we are not advising people wear masks in the gym as it makes exercise less safe.
Not sure if you will be allowed to wrestle though and if you did so you'd want to warn any elderly people you were visiting to see how they felt about possibly exposing themselves to the virus.

I would not do the wrestling but the gym should be OK. I've re-started mine. They have spaced the machines and we each receive a spray bottle of sanitiser and small towel on arrival that we carry around with us to clean equipment. We don't need to book but are encouraged to arrive in gym kit and avoid the showers. The air-con is extraction only.

Grandson returned to the gym the other day the floor area is marked out as boxes one person to a box they had to clean their equipment with disinfectant before and after use clean hands with sanitizer on entry and when leaving and strict social distancing is observed.

He thinks it was a lot safer than a lot of other places that have now been open for a while.
