Hair loss

Type 1
Hello, I have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes (beginning of June 2011) after having pancreatitis. I am coping with my diet and injections but my hair has been falling out and has become very thin. My doctor has told me that it is the body`s way of shutting down non essential things after suffering a trauma. Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Mary and welcome to the forum :) There has been a lot of discussion on hair loss as lots of us have this problem. Do a search on "hair loss" and you will find there are lots of threads about it. I suffer from hair loss and have had trouble finding the cause. One possible cause for me is Metformin but I don't think you will be taking it. I am a Type 2. Another possible cause is statins. Trauma of any sort can also make your hair fall out. All of these problems, unfortunately, are difficult to resolve. I take "Hair and Nails" from Healthspan but I can't tell if it does anything or not as my hair is still thin. It has the same ingredients as a much more expensive product which I think may be called Priurin which I also tried. If you do find anything that helps then post it here as I would love to know :)

Hi and welcome to the forum :D
I've had my hair cut much shorter as i was having problems with hair loss and breakage. I had DKA at the end of last year and my DSN told me it was more than likely from the stress that put on my body.

Hair loss is one of the symptoms of an under-active thyroid. Google 'hypothyroid symptoms' and have a read - the British Thyroid Society (or some similar name - the official charity) have some good info.

It's possible to have an under-active thyroid, with many of the symptoms, and still have perfectly normal thyroid levels in your blood tests. I do! I finally managed to persuade a doctor to treat me, and I am just soooo much better. I'm now on 100mg of Levothyroxine and my thyroid levels are still within the normal range.

Have a good chat to your doctor.

Hiya, diabetes plus an underactive thyroid can indeed cause hair loss, trauma and excessive stress too, can also cause hair loss. Like viv my hair with an hypothyroid was very very fine for ages till found the right doseage of Levothyroxine 125mg does the trick at present and am thrilled got a lovely head of hair now! It can take time to find the cause of hair loss and to have a chat with your GP would be the best place to start. Hope this helps? Anna.x :)

Thanks for your replies. I`m pleased to report that my hair loss has really slowed down and I`ve got frizzy bits growing through. I had a blood test for underactive thyroid when I was in hospital and this came back negative. I am also taking Creon an enzyme to help with my digestion after I had my gall bladder removed but I don`t think this has anything to do with my hair loss as I was taking it before I was diagnosed as being diabetic. I am due to see my dietician in a few weeks and will report back after that if she has any ideas.

Hi MARYCOLEMAN382, I too suffer from hair thinning and loss but I put mine down to having Hypothyroidism for years and going through the menopause as well as medication. I use a product called MANE it is a hair thickening spray but really does cover the hair loss and I won't be without it now. It comes in many different colours and a can of 200mls costs aroung £15 but it lasts for ages and to be honest mine got so bad that I felt embarrased even going to the shops but now everything is okay again, just google in MANE, best wishes, Debra x

Hi, just to report that my hair is growing back. It`s a bit frizzie and soft at the mo but is definitely thicker. It`s made me feel so much better now. I think I was becoming paranoid !!!
