Happy Diabetes Birthday

21st April 2009, had just gotten back from holiday in South Africa.

Never had a honeymoon period as I was symptomatic to a greater or lesser degree for more than a year.

Was released from hospital (Addenbrookes) on 23rd, to be honest I think they got sick of me wandering off as I was on Diabetic ward and everyone there seemed to be having something or other chopped off. It was lovely outside so I kept going for walks to get fresh air.

Happy diabirthday Bluemarine! Mine is the 24th October. I made a cake for it last year as it was my first one :)

Lol. Your diagnosis period sounds a lot like mine. I was displaying symptoms for a year, and as a thirteen year old in a ward full of old people, got very bored. I particularly remember going for a walk when the consultant was late and missing his visit...

Yup, it all seemed to dreary on the ward and it was lovely outside.
So I got a nurse to show me how to silence the alarms on the plumbing I was still attached to, left my mobile number with the nurse at the desk and toddled off for a walk.
When I got back they were really concerned and said they had been looking for me, when I pointed out they had my number they were a bit sheepish they had forgotten.

That said the nurses on the ward were brilliant.

34 years type 1, a little black and blue but still fighting :)

21th November 1965. I was 11yo, miserable and upset in a hospital ward, not understanding why all the other kids had visitors but I didn’t. I had been admitted that day and my folks had been told by the ward sister not to come back until the following day as they would be busy doing many tests on me – sadly the staff hadn’t told me my folks wouldn’t be coming in! It was snowing outside and I lay for hours looking out at it. Around 9pm just as the ward lights were going down a young doctor sat on the end of the bed and told me I needed to start drinking the sweet liquid he had in a large long glass. Then, more and more of it until I was sick. Next morning I got my first injection and over the next two days I could feel the difference and wasn’t so tired and was beginning to feel hungry again. Up until that point, I needed to be lifted in and out of bed as I’d no energy. Weirdly the one thing that still sticks in my mind more than any other was hearing a nurse whisper to another about how thin I was. I hope things have changed! Bill

to me!
On the 03rd December 2012, I was released from the hospital with my Type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

October 1966 at 12 years old. I remember Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich being in the charts and everyone going on about some football match that England had won!
