Mrs DeeJay and I have just had a pleasant week in Mallorca, with a package deal including half-board at a hotel which serves all meals buffet style, and with a huge choice of food. So it was quite easy for me as a greedy carnivore to eat as much as I wanted of the things I like, from bacon-eggs-tomato for breakfast to roast beef and/or stir-fry at night. I had no difficulty ignoring the puddings, of which there were many. Mrs DeeJay conducted extensive research.
The only shortcomings were lots of potatoes (they grow them) and few green veg. The cheese selection was a bit sparse. And I gave up with cream for coffee since the only cream anywhere was supersweet mousse in a squirty can. So I used Mrs Deejay's semi-skimmed in coffee in the room and drank it black outside, which was 90 per cent of the time.
Restaurant lunches were also easy with salads, fish and tapas. However I ate half a plate of chips when they arrived unexpectedly with grilled sardines and salad. The unexpected always catches me out. Plus the bill came to £40 and I wanted something approaching my moneysworth.
I took 4 Lidl rolls, a pack of Babybel cheeses and a jar of roast mixed nuts for emergencies or snacks. Mrs Deejay ate most of the nuts and I had the last half-roll on return. These supplies were most useful while travelling, either in-airport or on the plane. On the way home, incidentally, everyone on the plane was banned from even opening a packet of peanuts since there was one passenger so allergic to nuts (they said) that s/he would be in mortal danger.
I didn't take any blood-sugar testing kit since my regime seems to have worked so far and my next project is a fortnight with a Freestyle Libre monitor some time in May, followed by my annual HbA1C assessment.
As usual I lost a couple of kg on holiday, but a few mug-cakes will restore the balance.
It was the easiest holiday we've ever had and I hope others will be encouraged to make a plan and have a good time free from worry.
Incidentally there were many people at the resort with walking difficulties who enjoyed the various tours despite bus steps, cathedral steps, cobbled streets and so forth. The guides were discreetly patient, even walking at the back of the crocodile with the slowest. When the fast walkers who had pushed to the front realised they were lost, they had to turn round and come back. Ha ha.

Sounds like you had a perfect time :) sounds lovely :)

- I get the thing about the peanuts even though it's annoying- a girl in my son's school was so allergic that none of the kids were allowed any products with peanuts in at school at all. I recall a news story some years ago about someone on a plane journey being very ill (they may even have died I'm not sure) because the person in the seat before them had had peanuts and wiped their hands on the seat!

Useful, I'm off to Italy tomorrow and have a pretty similar agenda. My wife will be having pasta and pizza every night no doubt, I will opt for meat, fish, veggies and a few spuds.
I'm planning on leaving the meter at home too.
I'm also planning on taking a few Lidl rolls, can I ask how long they stay edible for?

Glad you enjoyed it @DeejayR

We stopped going abroad when we retired 11 years ago and now have 5 or 6 holidays a year in the UK in self catering cottages in various parts of the country. Since discovering Lidl rolls I take several with me for the week. If ever they stop selling them I will be totally distraught.

I actually try to have a Libre when away, all in the interest of science, to see what happens when I have an ice cream, more chips than I should, and that delicious slice of Victoria Sponge with clotted cream I allow myself once a year! ;) I find it very useful and far more convenient than finger pricking. Holidays are for relaxing and having fun, and no place for pricking fingers constantly.

Five days seems to be ok for the lidl rolls. They do not make the week but we keep them in the bin with other bread which is opened regularly. They start to go green on top. Have a nice holiday

Don't you freeze them? They last forever there!

Yes I do . I know they defrost really fast too. But my brothers and sister are diabetic to so sometimes we buy extra. My freezer tends to be bursting at the seams and it is so easy just to put them in the bread bin . Being lazy I just don't seem to get round to freezing so last week one went green.

We kept them in the mini-fridge in the hotel room, which helped I guess. I could have toasted a half roll in the dining room, but never got round to it. (There was also a toaster specially for coeliacs.)
What food you can take into what country seems to vary with the politics, health laws, agriculture protection laws and even the customs people on duty on the day. If in doubt, eat it on the plane and pack the rest in the hold luggage.

I'm going to Turkey for 10 weeks in May, and dreading it. I was only diagnosed in February so I don't think it's practical for me to not take my meter. Eating out is going to be a nightmare. I don't want to go at all, if the truth was known, but I can't tell my OH that. He's so looking forward to it....

@Buttons11 Outside this forum you don't seem to be getting much help from anyone except perhaps your optician, who sounds sensible. What does your OH expect you to do on holiday? Is he supportive?
@HelenHak came up with some positive ideas in your thread http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/holidays.118207/. Perhaps you could start from there and make up your mind to be in control and enjoy yourself after all. It's tricky, but worth it!

I have spent some time working in Istanbul over the years. Lots of choice of meat mostly grilled (except pork), fish and vegetables especially salads (remember not to call it Greek salad). I wasn't diabetic at the time but it wouldn't have been a problem, just avoid the bread and rice.

Bread is best kept at room temperature if it can't be frozen. I don't know if it is the same for the Lidl rolls, but ordinary bread goes stale faster at temperatures just above freezing than higher or lower. Lower rather than higher humidity helps to keep moulds at bay.
I used to work on storage testing for Allied Lyons.

Off to Majorca in late June and will take Lidl rolls with me for lunch on the plane and a few for arrival. Always have basic salad for 1st course and then more salad with fish or cold meats for main course - never understood who wants steak pie or shepherds pie in hot weather. I find that the heat and lots of walking keeps my bloods lower than normal so I will be sure to keep testing. I do find that I can enjoy the fresh and dried fruit in the buffets without any bad effects while away in the heat.

If I could eat steak and vegetables I would be fine, but I've always been a fussy eater, and although not vegetarian, the only meat I eat is a little chicken or mince! I think I'm going to have to get a bit more adventurous with fish :)
