Hard to understand

I take insulin and Mets. Before breskfast, my BG was 6. I had one weetabix with small splash of milk, then one slice brown bread with marmalade. I took 6units of insulin and one Met. Two hours later I took a BG reading and it was 17. How could it go so high?

cereal, bread and marmalade together with insufficient insulin would be my opinion....

what is the basis of your insulin dose?

The timing of your mealtime insulin may also be a factor.

Do you carb count? How far in advance of eating do you inject?

I agree with what the others have said. For me I'd have to bolus more units than you did for that meal. It just may be that you need more insulin than you're taking. But then I guess the question is, is this your usual breakfast? If it is and you normally get good sugar readings from your 6 units of insulin then it may be something else that is affecting your levels as well. Eg. dehydration, sickness, pain, change in temperature, anything that causes your body to stress really. Just a thought... as I know that is often the case with me. I wish you the best. :)

Too much carb and not enough insulin?

1 weatabix - 27g of carbs
80ml semi skimmed milk -4g
1 medium slice no is whole meal - 11g
1 teaspoon robertsons golden shred marmalade - 10g

Total breakfast carb count - 52g

6u for 52g of carbs isn't that much, it's about the "start off" 1:10 ratio. But I'm assuming, as you are on metformin, you have some insulin resistance, so the standard start of ratio is unlikely to be enough for you.

As an occasional Weetabix eater, I think the carbs there are for two biscuits @catapillar :)

Your point about the amount of insuoin to carbs is still valid though.

@lynbrown Have you been able to do more breakfast checks? Often eating the same meal and tweaking insuoin can help, but only do this is you're confident adjusting doses. Otherwise, speak to your DSN.

Sorry, you are right - I'm clearly not restrained enough to only eat one weatabix!

So total carbs 39g. Which makes it a 1:6 ratio (I think, I hate maths, its most unfortunate I have to use it to stay alive).

Have you done DAFNE @lynbrown ? Is this your standard breakfast and you usually don't experience such a spike? Or was it a different breakfast? Or, do you not usually do a post prandial test after breakfast?

Are you type 2 with insulin (based on the forum, sorry it doesn't say your "type" in your info bit)?
