Hi

Two weeks ago my Gp informed me that I was diabetic with a blood sugar level of 54. I was started immediately on Metformin twice daily and referred to the Diabetc Clinic and the Dietician even though I am not overweight, go to the gym three times a week and have a good diet!

I was in total shock to say the least!

This week I had an appointment with my Gp to discuss my diabetes and find out the result of the second bloods taken last week. I have now been told that my blood result came back at 40 and given my history and no diabetes in the family that am NOT diabetic! He had no explanation (his words) for the high result first time around and it could have been a 'blip' in the lab on the day!!!

Whilst I am very relieved, I wonder how unusual it is to have two such different readings and what might be the cause. Has anyone else had a similar experience to this please?

I hope that's true ..... but I'd go back as a "just in case" in about a month or two for insurance's / assurance's sake. 54 might well have been an error. 40 is fine.

You do not want to be part of this group ... and take this the right way ..... we'd love you around, but on the other hand, we wouldn't

Good luck :) Mike

Hi. If the blood tests were just random or fasting ones then they can vary a lot. An HBa1C test is normally quite reliable. Anyway sounds like you may have just escaped but al least you can keep an eye on it over the coming months.

I think it would pay to have a repeat HbA1c test as well as a fasting blood glucose test, just to be sure. Good luck.

Hello. As @Mike D says, welcome but don't take your coat off just yet. To me this is very unsatisfactory and deserves a proper response. Although I'm not Mr Pushy in real life I would steel myself to push for another test asap and a positive decision one way or the other. In other words, take control a bit more and don't let the dear old NHS run your life.
Let us know how it goes.

I'd definitely have a further test done. I was diagnosed in February with hba1c of 58, then after three months 39 but I'm about a stone overweight

As others have said, definitely demand another hb1ac test. You can get a blood glucose test done for free in some pharmacies I've seen them in Asda, I'm not sure if other places do them as well.

I agree that you should ask for another test, perhaps in a month or two. 40 is still getting very close to pre diabetes, although hopefully the 54 was just a blip and you won't end up in our gang. We welcome new members but would rather you didn't join :)
