Has anyone had any side effects from taking Lantus?

I've been on it for the best part of 7 years but in the last few years have developed debilitating symptoms which are exactly like autonimic neuropathy. Extreme fatigue and nausea are bothersome at the moment.

Should note that my hba1c's have ranged from 32-54 during this time with the most recent being 46.

Hi,

I’ve used Glargine & Lantus for many, many years. I’m not really happy with the performance of the insulin (my doc thinks otherwise.)
I still can’t testify that some of the many listed side effects in the link are due to Lantus. Oddly, we recently bought a new mattress that resolved any aching & sleep issues?

I’ll tag in @EllieM . She uses Lantus & may have a differing experience to mine.

Thanks for the tag and what an amazing set of side effects.

I have to say that I do wonder a bit about the weight gain one, though low carbing has helped with that and you never know whether something that happens and is listed as a possible side effect is actually caused by the medication, or would have happened anyway. I've been using lantus for ten to fifteen years.

The only side effect that I personally get and am sure is caused by lantus are hypos - in particular I've had 2 or 3 lantus lows where I've probably injected into a blood vessel and the lantus gets absorbed rapidly rather than over 24 hours. I've dealt with this by splitting the lantus dose, and this has also smoothed out the medication for me, so I'm happy with this as a solution.

@ModyGirl what do your clinic say about lantus as a possible cause of your issues? I've got to admit I'm skeptical, but I guess there is no harm in asking to trial a different basal to see if it makes a difference.

I'm guessing that you've already searched out research papers to see if your issues are associated with your particular MODY variant? Are you attending a clinic with decent experience of MODY?

I am was changed to insulin glargine after an ER visit, was told the VA does not carry Lantus Solostar anymore noticed increased in eating then, This past December found a few pens of Solostar still in my refrigerator. I waited 3 days from taking insulin glargine and began the insulin Solostar. I woke up with tingling shooting pains in my toes and it was painful to walk. Does any have these symptoms.

Hi, I used to be on Lantus and experienced a number of unexpected Hypos - the last which was dreadful. It must have gone into a blood vessel and instantly became 'fast-acting' for the whole dose of 16 units. It is a serious flaw and I reported it via the yellow card system. I managed to transfer to Tresiba, which cannot act like that if injected into a blood vessel. No problems at all now since the big hypo in 2019.
