Has LCHF/diabetes changed where/how you shop?

Hi,

Has the way you shop for food changed since diagnosis/adoption of the LCHF diet? Do you still go to the supermarkets but stick to the fresh produce sections only? Or have you started using the smaller shops which may have more inspiring selections of veg, fruit, cheese, meat, etc? Markets? Farmers markets? Farm shops? Indian/Chinese/Turkish stores? Internet shopping to avoid being tempted? Quality over quantity, etc? I know it's also a question of time, budget and what's available locally but still, I'm curious.

I know I feel a lot happier and less deprived if I shop more at markets and smaller shops. There's a lot less junk on offer and the produce is often nicer.

Hi Rosbif. I still use Tesco to shop. Although I do not visit the shop as I have a bad habit of being tempted by offers on good I should not be eating. I like internet shopping but you dont get the bargins. The advantage is you can take your time selecting which foods you can/can not eat without being tempted by whats in the shop. Eat item has the nutritional values for you to read and decide if you want it or not. I tend to look at items that have 5 or less ingredients and less than 10g of carbs per 100g. I stick to real/whole foods rather than manufactured foods and definitely watch the Es and sugars.

Not changed where we shop but definitely become avid checkers of labels. We now walk round the supermarket saying "wow so many carbs in that, who would have thought".. before putting things back on the shelf.

I like to look at my local supermarket's website to check nutritional info, whether they sell certain products and also to spot hidden "gems" (for example, the organic section might have just what you're after (quality chocolate, unsalted nuts, etc) but you don't think to look there).

I am taking much longer to do my grocery shopping now which isn't a problem as I am retired and have more time. I read the food labels to check the carbohydrate content. I still use the same supermarkets I did before, mainly Sainsburys and Waitrose as they are easiest for me to get to, though now I go to LIDL at least once a week mainly to get their High Protein rolls. I note what other forum members recommend and look out for those items.

I don't think the LIDLs over here do the high protein rolls but they're good for deli meats, cheese, fruit and veg and also things like Brazil nuts and walnuts which are great value compared with the regular supermarkets. A new larger-sized LIDL is opening up by us soon, so I'll be curious to see what's new.

I don't get any real choice as to where I shop as my husband chooses to shop online with Tesco. Becoming diabetic meant that initially I had to do a lot of pre shopping research, but Tesco have nutritional info available for most of their products on their website. It was time consuming initially though. The only difference now is that I have to pay extra over my share of the food bill to obtain more specialist items that I can't get from Tesco, and have to use other online sources such as Amazon for these.

But overall I'm now able to insist on a much healthier diet than I was obliged to eat previously!

Yep. Takes another half hour to check the labels until you buy the same things regularly.

I'm buying frozen cauliflower by the kilo as I'm having caulirice or cauli-fauxtato to accompany most evening meals - it's certainly no trouble to get hold of, but oh boy I think I'm going to need a bigger freezer....

I still mainly shop with Asda (weekly home delivery), a monthly shop at Lidl and the occasional forgotten thing from our local Sainsbury. It WAS reasonably okay. I stopped buying some things and started buying others but it pretty much equalled out.

Then my husband decided he wanted to follow a Paleo way of eating and that is when it got very expensive.

I find trolley road rage (mine) unpleasant, so we have internet shopped for years now.

About once a month I scuttle in, scoot around, blink wildly at all the processed packaged rubbish on sale, and leave again.

The only local shops that are worth the effort are a FANTASTIC butchers, that we use all the time and a HORRIFICALLY good deli, that I try never to enter, for fear of cream cakes, artisan cheesecakes and profiterole gateaux spontaneously falling into my bag. All the other local shops have gone the £1 shop/card shop/corner shop route, and that isn't helpful for finding unprocessed food.

No, he's eating loads of veg, too. It's the nuts and different oils plus all the grass fed meat that costs a bomb.

Our local butcher suddenly changed recently. He used to sell reasonably priced, good quality, everyday meat, poultry, ham, cheese and home made pies. He now sells (in addition to the normal mince and chops) 'wild' meats, free range and other more unusual stuff and also does internet sales. In the process of this metamorphosis he started charging almost double for the normal stuff. He also then put in a planning objection when Lidl wanted to build a store in the next village. We don't shop there any more.
