Type of diabetes
LADA
Dear All,

Greetings to you all as a new diabetic!
I am new diagnosed (34 y.o) as a diabetic and still in research of which type I am. Did some blood test analysis, had some symptoms. Listed them all below:

Symptoms (for at least last 6 months)
-Extreme thirst
-Waking up in the middle of the night to eat and drink something
-Always wanting to eat something sweets (chocolates especially)
- I lost 25 kgs in the last 3 years, currently stable around 66kgs (height 171cm) for a quite long time, but I should have gained weight compared to my double eating.
-felt always healthy, I am quite active and sportive, have never had complications, and they just got me in the emergency saying I was very sick.

Blood test results:
-Hba1C 14.8
-C peptide: 0.65 (ideal range in report mentioned as 1.1 - 4.4)
-fasting bg level 390 mg/dl
-Other blood valuess within the normal ranges

What do you think my type is? Lada? Type2 or is there any other types or should I do more tests?
Currently using novorapid (every premeal) and LEVEMIR (once every evening)
Levels dropped dramatically but I am still around 6-14 mmol in general.

You are currently being treated as type 1.

There is not an awful lot of point saying you are LADA or 1.5 as they are both type 1 but slow on set with a long strong honeymoon period and as you are on basal bolus insulin you aren't having a long strong honeymoon period.

Your diagnosis story sounds like type 1. Did you have ketones on diagnosis?

One test to consider if you are particularly concerned about type is antibody testing for the antibodies associated with autoimmune type 1 diabetes. A GAD test is not a definitive test as 25% of type 1s are GAD negative, so a negative GAD test doesn't necessarily mean you aren't type 1, but a positive GAD test means you definitely are.

Actually yes, they were concerned about my ketone levels and in the report there's mentioning of "3+" only, I havent done any further test as they said after insuline injections I will get back to normal. And yes, I actually feel "settled" after the injections.
I dont drink like crazy. Dont visit the toilet at Nights. Dont have dry mouth in the mornings, cut all the sweet stuff directly (but I still desire chocolate alot..)
I havent got all the results yet from the lab, but it kinda makes me sad as I have the worry this condition will affect my social life. (outdoors and traveling)

Could somebody shortly describe what the difference is( in terms of lifestyle, diet and routine) between type 1 and 2? I dont think either is better but just curious..

Type 2 is insulin resistance. Type 2 can be controlled without insulin injections (diet and exercise, oral meds), to achieve this a lifestyle change is often required as quite a range of lifestyle factors can cause insulin resistance, things like irregular sleep patterns, high stress levels, and the more obvious weight loss and diet change.

Type 1 is lack of insulin. It is treated with insulin injections. No lifestyle change is required. All you are doing is replacing the insulin your pancreas would have produced (but can't anymore because your immune system has killed off the insulin producing beta cells) with exogenous insulin. There may be a bit more planning (for exercise), calculating (for carb counting) and testing required, but there's no reason type 1 should have any impact on being able to be outdoors and travel.

Welcome @Acaner2002.

This is a great place and @catapillar is one of the best-informed members (and has, rightly, corrected me when I get my diabetes facts wrong).

The time immediately after diagnosis is difficult and stressful for many of us, regardless of diabetes type. The good news is that most of us learn to live with the disease and have full and active lives. Indeed in some cases, the activity level increases because we have an extra motivation to "stay healthy."

Welcome to the forum. Be sure to stick around and find some great support. I am new also, it almost feels like a safe place for me already.
