Type of diabetes
Type 2
I have been told I have diabetes type 2 after a glucose tolerance test and been put on Metformin tablets twice a day. The results of the test was Fasting 120 mg/ dl . After one hour 197 mg/ dl . After two hours 159 mg/dl . Is this diabetes or pre diabetes ?
I am taking readings at home and fasting is between 95 and 104. Two hours after food readings are between 93 and 120. I am British but live in Cyprus so there is no after card here so no one to talk to, so glad I found this site loads of great info thanks you.

Hi. Those 2 hour readings are excellent and indicate that you may be pre-diabetic only at the moment. I would continue taking the Metformin and checking 2 hours after typical meals and see how you go. If you don't have excess weight, the Metformin may not be necessary long-term if you have a lower-carb diet?

Thanks Daibell. I am over weight but lost 2 stone over the last 6 months before they said I was diabetic, I am still losing weight and figure I need to loss another 2 stone. I have started a low carb diet but need to be careful with fats. Also I have started to do more exercise.

Why do you think you have to be careful with fats?

An HbA1c test is a more conclusive indication of your BG state over a glucose tolerance test. It gives an average of your BG over a period of 2-3 months. If you request this test from your local hospital they will be able to ascertain where about in the diabetic range you fall, i.e. pre-diabetic or diabetic:

Depending on the health care situation in Cyprus, you may or may not get this blood test free of charge.

Hi GrantGram I take meds fot high blood pressure and my cholesterol is up near the top of the scale so don't want it any higher. Trying to keep of Statins. My blood pressure is so much better since I started the Metformin, it was all over the place before.

Hi again I will have a word with the doctor over here when I see him next about the test you mention ( Iwill look it up shortly) thank you. It is quick to get tests done over here and private is cheap, the only thing is you have to look after yourself there is not much follow up and no support.

If you go truly LCHF your cholesterol will most likely go down. There are many new studies coming out now that prove dietary fat does not cause high cholesterol. Others will disagree with me but many on here have seen lowered cholesterol while eating higher fat. The LCHF diet does not mean eating gobs of butter with a spoon or drinking oil out of the bottle. It is simply using full fat foods which are whole foods and have not been chemically altered or had sugars added.

There's a lot of disagreement of cholesterol.. good or bad. . as @chalup has said a lot of people here report lower cholesterol doing Low Carb High Fat personally I believe that the body is perfectly able to control its own levels so I leave it alone to do its stuff and would never take statins. I just give my body the correct nutrition and let it get on with it. My blood pressure as gone down probably due to the 6 stone weight loss on LCHF and some intermittent fasting.

hi Chalup thanks for advice. I am having a very low carb diet so will not worry so much now about the fats ( lean meat dairy etc).

Hi Bulkbiker thanks for advice, I am having low carbs I will not worry so much about the high fat side, the weight is coming of and my blood pressure is better now then it's been for 2 years. I think the Metformin is now causing me to have lots of pain in both my shoulders and giving me dizzzy spells so am going to stop taking it today, if these problems stop then I will know it's the Metformin. However I will keep to the LCHF and test blood regularly, hoping with diet, weight loss and regular exercise that will be enough to keep every thing in control.
