Hi everyone, I just got back from dsn appt. Got my tests results . I was diagnosed 4 weeks ago and results from 3 weeks ago are
HbA1C 6.7%
Cholesterol 3.9: hdl 1.1 ldl 2.1 triglicerides 0.7
Kidneys >90
Liver normal( she didn't tell me numbers)

Nurse was not helpfull at all I had to push for every little bit of info about my results, I had to ask what are the normal levels for diabetic and non diabetic etc. Nurse said that she is very happy with my results and that I will have my next blood test in November- 6 months away. ... first time I saw her she told me not to test, not to reduce my carbs. etc Of course I didn't listen
I asked her that I would like to have big blood test done in 3 months time, cause how else do I know if I am controlling BS ok. She said that she's not allowed to do it and that lab would not do test in 3 months time, cause they supposed to do it 1 or 2 times a year .And she said "plenty of exercise" that's all I need grrr
From what I see on this forum people have their big test every 3 months. Should I approach my GP about it?
I have a feeling that dn just wanted to get rid of me asap.
Or is there an option to pay for the test, and have it done more frequently?

Hi, well done it looks like your getting the hang of things.

I have my HbA1c done every 3 months. I don't know what the guide lines are regarding intervals between test, but I'd see the GP and have a word with him to see if you can get it done 3 monthly. At my surgery, I log on and book my appointment and up to now they've not said anything.

I dont know where you are in the country but I have also been told I can only have a HbA1c test once a year.

I also asked the nurse how, as a newly diagnosed person, I will know if my diabetes is controlled?

She said that the metformin will control it, I dont need to test, and Diabetes is such a slowly progressing disease that an annual blood check is all I need

You have my support and sympathy.

Thank you for replies. I will go and see my doctor about it, and I am also thinking about changing surgery cause with this nurse I am going to get nowhere:(

at our practice i get a test twice a year so not get to test unless i pay for my own strips so do not bother.
i started with a 7.9 level and have it down to 4.9 (31) at last test took me 6 months my dn felt that i will not get that level again not sure that i will this time either just hoping its not over the mark

Well at least she is right on one comment (progression) but exactly at what speed it will progress? when a/ you are not given the opportunity to see how high your BS is and b/you have another Idiot of a nurse looking after you, certainly Metformin will not control it on it's own without diet change and for my mind careful monitoring with your meter, well it's a bit like playing Russian roulette? and what if it does progress rapidly is it her Life that will be ruined!!!!!! I don't think so. They really make me sick.

My hbac1 was done 3 weeks ago and it was 101, I've been on Metformin 3x a day but Its having a minimal effect on my daily bg levels, they've started coming down to around 11.5 but even a slice of toast sends it back up to 18 or 19. I'm still waiting to find our what type I am, I thought I had the doctor today but it's tomorrow. Can't sleep for worrying about it

Only the very best GP practice do HbA1c every 3 months. Some of us get them every 6 and many get only one per year. Once a year is the minimum standard as recommended by DUK and NICE. The simplest thing is to get your own meter and supply your own strips. These Nurses really think what they are doing is good enough and HATE to be challened. As to your numbers, just ask for a print out.
Many PCTs use a little booklet called "Know your numbers" which they give to patients. Try asking for one. It's a kind of log book. Anyway you have a RIGHT to those results. If your nurse won't or can't explain them, Ask here!

I have a full range of tests every 12 months, including B12 and kidney function, but I get an HbA1c and cholesterol every 3 months, plus thyroid, full blood count, liver function and urea & electrolytes. I'm very lucky! :D
