HbA1C questions

Hi
As a newbie please forgive me for my ignorance but after trawling through the internet I am not able to get an answer to my questions.

I had an ordinary BG test which was 7.2, a fasting one which was 4.1 and an HbA1C which was 48. Which if any do I take as a result if any? Will I be told to go back for more tests?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The Hba1c shows an average for the last couple of months, it tests how much glucose the red corpuscles have been floating around in. 48 is considered to be just diabetic level.
The ordinary test gives you your level at that instant. The fasting one is how you start your day.
You should be retested in a few months - but you have crossed into being diabetic.
If you modify your diet to lower your intake of carbohydrates with any luck you could quickly drop back to lower levels of Hba1c

It looks like you are very borderline. If the 7.2 was random and taken not long after eating, then it is normal. The fasting test was very definitely normal. The HbA1c is only 1mmol/l inside the diabetes range. It could mean you are pre-diabetic. Your GP should really do a confirmation test before making a diagnosis. This is the normal procedure with borderline cases.

The HbA1c has an error rate, which I think is something like plus or minus 4%, and also the labs round up or down the actual result. So you could have been 48.4 or 47.5.
 
Thank you very much Resurgam and Bluetit1802. This really does help. I have been in a quandary about this and cannot wait to find out what the doctor will say in my phone appointment on Friday. I will try and repost to let you know the result of this.
