Hello!

had my latest hba1c results back and i'm down to 6.2% now.

I'm only on 2 * 500mg metformin a day, but being 26 dont want to take tablets if i dont need to!
I've asked the doctor if i can try 1 a day instead, and he is happy to do this.

has anyone ever done this? any tips advice etc?

I have got it down from 11.2% (July 09) to 6.2% (Nov 10) so i'm getting better!!!

Thanks!

Thats a good drop and I can understand your desire to cut down on tablets, but I urge you to finger test regularly to check if your BG is starting to rise due to cutting down. You may find it takes two tablets to maintain your present test results.

I keep reading in New Scientist about possible side effects of metformin, eg it might make you live longer, it might help your memory, and it might reduce your risk of cancer! So I wouldn't be too quick to stop taking it! I can't because it makes me sick sometimes and then I go hypo because of the insulin :(
5.8 is ok for someone with diabetes but not 'normal' eg non diabetic for before food.

Hi Petchy I was diagnosed Diabetic 2 June 09 age 73 now 75. My result yesterday was 6.2 and my Metformin reduced to one a day. I have known my GP for longer than you are old!!!He has now semi retired on 4 sessions a week plus loads of background work. I used to be the practice midwife18 years ago. Some recent research seems to be pointing to putting the target up to 7+ on HBA1c for type twos. Won't enlarge on that, though I have read the short research article on internet when I got home. I go back for another bloodtest in Feb and review what's to do then.

I don't know if I'd reduce the met in your situation. 6.2% is a pretty **** good HbA1c - but some Dr.'s like to keep it a little higher to mitigate the risk of hypos.

Metformin is a good drug to be on (if you can tolerate it).
