hi I was on victozer in November but it was not suiting me went back to consultant in January who decided to put me on glicazide 1 twice a day then after 2 weeks of sugars not falling below 16.0 I rang a diabetic nurse who uped my glicazide to 2 twice a day and put me on insulatard which help bring sugars to no more than 12 .0 I had my hba1c test on Friday pre op surgery and got a call saying it was 10.5 new result 91 percent so surgery has to be cancelled has realistically it needs to be under 10 but better at eight I have been waiting for over a year for this surgery on foot had surgery on shoulder in october in which I had a athroscopic rotator cuff repair so been off work since then then 15th april came up for foot surgery so I asked doctor he advised me to stay of work until I have had foot done but now have to apply for employment support allowance has I cannot walk on foot as it is very much because of pain and I work as a postwoman the pre op nurse asked her boss after I explained I want to get back to work and has said I can go ahead with it as long as I am aware of risks but I feel this week it will be cancelled any info would be great

Hi. Can I ask how old you are? I note you were once on Victoza which is normally reserved for those who are overweight. If quite young and not overweight then a diagnosis of Late onset Type 1 is possible as your blood sugar is so high and not responding to Gliclazide. Let us know whether your BMI is within the normal range. What sort of diet do you have? Is it a low-carb diet? Ref surgery that is a decision that has to be taken with your consultant. At the time of the op itself I think the consultant will say that it is desirable that your blood sugar is near normal to avoid infection risks. I guess you could be put onto insulin temporarily to bring the sugars down. With an HBa1C of over 10 in my view going onto insulin at least for a while could make sense as an HBa1C that high implies damage is being done.
