Hi all,

my last HBA1C was 16.1%

seriously.

please don't tell me how bad that is because i am already fully aware of how disgusted i should be.

horror over. :)

my next HBA1C is on 26th jan.

according to my meter my average levels are 13.1 which according to a website which converts it into a HBA1C percentage is 10%...

YEY! i don't care about being in the 5% club. i don't care if a child has a better HBA1C than me.

believe me i've worried too much about all that.

whats amazing is i care that my HBA1C is no longer 16% TERRIIIIIBLE!

what i would like to know is how reliable my average is?

should i expect it to be lower as that is just from random testing not a constant monitor and assume that going from a high sugar to a lower one would add lower sugar readings, therefore making the end figure lower?

e.g

10, 10, 4 makes an average of 8 (readings i test for)
10, 10, 4, 8, 6, 4 makes an average of 5.3 (readings i test for but more readings between the lowest and highest)

i hope someone understands my logic and agrees as i would be ESTATIC if i could get to single figures

even if its 9.9%

The trouble with trying to compare these two different readings is that the HBa1c is a 90 day average and the meter readings are just a snap shot of your blood at one particular time.

It depends on how often you test per day as to whether your meter average is anything like your Hba1c.

Good luck with the test though I'm sure you will be lower.

90 days? i thought it was 8 weeks?

i hope it isnt because that means i wont be where i think i might be

No, you are mistaken. Have a read of this link about HbA1c. Explains all.
http://medweb.bham.ac.uk/easdec/prevent ... _hba1c.htm

An extract:
Red cells live for 8 -12 weeks before they are replaced. By measuring the HbA1C it can tell you how high your blood glucose has been on average over the last 8-12 weeks........ (close to 90 days) That is why you normally get your HbA1c done every 3 months, if you are lucky !!

ah pants.

i thought it was 8 weeks.

i guess thats also 2-3 months

2 months of good control (for me anyway)

and one bad.

so it might not be lower than i thought,

ah we'll soon see then,

thanks anyway guys

You live life. You have a reality check. At the moment, this diabtetes is a life long thing. My diabetes Nurse once shrugged her shoulders and said "I couldn't do it, day in day out for life".

At your next appointment - look your doc in the eye and say "I need some additional help". I did to my Doc in November and luckily, she took me seriously.

Don't think you have to take this on your shoulders yourself.

well my hba1c was 8 last time and it high for me but nt to high its just average but ures is 16 and yeah i be worried i be cutting back on foods i eat r giving less insulin to match me food i eating .

Average life of a red corpuscle is 120 days. However, since they are "turning over " continuously, the more recent ones have a higher influence on the final Hba1c.

oooh,

when you put it like that it makes me feel a bit better about it,

we'll soon see,

i have a week to 'influence' it better and get some good bloods going :)

thanks
x
