Hello all and greetings from North Wales

I was a fat and unfit 50 year old with my head firmly buried in the sand about my diet and lifestyle, and even though my Dad was a type 2 I just ignored it. Anyway, the pigeons came home to roost and I was diagnosed with type 2 on the last day of July this year. My BMI at the time was 32.7 and I had the usual range of initial feelings such as guilt turning to anger turning to worry etc.
Anyway, I did a lot of reading on this forum about the Newcastle diet and low cal management etc and decided to do something about it. I have been following a low cal diet of my own creation (just counting cals) since 01st of August, and the results are very encouraging. My BMI is now 26.95 and I'm 3 stone lighter! I feel like I did 20 years ago and life is so more enjoyable again. My energy levels are excellent and I look forward to going for a walk most evenings after dinner.
I'm still taking 2 x 500 Metformin a day, but am thinking of stopping soon with my doctor's blessings. Fasting bg for the last couple of weeks have been in the 4's and my after dinner 2 hour readings are now between 5.5 and 7 depending on what I have been eating. I still have another 2 stones to lose to attain my personal goal of 12 stones, but I can see the end in sight now that I'm more than halfway. I have been on blood pressure medication for about 4 years, but this has now come down to normal levels and hopefully I can stop this medication when the diet ends.
All in all, this has been a positive life changing time for me and it's a shame that it took diabetes to kick me in to action. However, if I hadn't have had diabetes would I have started down this road to health?
I hope this is a positive read for the newly diagnosed and I hope that by grabbing this thing by the scruff of the neck, I can take more positives than negatives going forward with my life.
Costing me a fortune in trousers though!

Hi welcome, and very well done on your progress :)

I can certainly relate to the last line ...

So good to hear your story and thanks for sharing :). You have certainly done a fantastic job. It will be nice to have you around here. Please keep posting.

Best, annelise

Hello welcome, it's really good to read such an encouraging post. As annelise says........stay around:) Let us know the results of your blood tests, ask for a printout because you are entitled to one:)

Well done and congratulations on your weight loss, I'm sure your good progress will continue so keep it going :)

Well done and congrats! Just around the corner from north wales. See you and I go to the same hair stylist!
Keep it up mate.

Well done mate.
Yeah It does cost a bit in new
clothes, but don't it feel good . to buy medium tops instead of xxl and size 28/30 trousers instead of 34/36.

Hairy Camel , there's a few of us on here relate to what you say . We do 40 minutes activity every day and low carb. I feel better than I have in years ( not the passed 2 days ..ive got a cold boo hoo) .
I was out walking on Sunday morning and wondered the same as you, if I didn't have type 2 would I be as healthy? Probably not.

I am so pleased for you. Congratulations and celebrations... It really is great isn't it. When you get close to your target weight you will need to increase your diet to stabilise the weight lose. You will then need to decide what you are going to increase. I created a thread on this subject a while back - dormant now - so if you need some assistance with diet changes later I am sure we can help.

Congratulations @Hairycamel and well done for looking beyond the NHS prescribed "Eat well" diet (which may have contributed to your descent into Type 2 if the evidence is anything to go by).

As for the trousers, do what I do: scour the charity shops.

Thanks all for your very supportive replies. Andrew, when I read your 3 month results I saw that there were many aspects of our lifestyles/diagnoses that were very similar and your outstanding results are something for me to aim for.
Thank you all!

As a newly diagnosed T2 I was really encouraged to read your post.
Notice I didn't say "as a 50+ overweight newly diagnosed T2!)
Glad you've been so successful and are feeling so much better.

Yes I noticed the similarities when I read your post - including the age as well!
