I am starting to get to grips with my diet and what I should do to balance and make much better choice.
my question is, I am quite anxious about going out with friends to an Indian restaurant and what I can choose from the menu?
the table was booked several months ago and I don’t want to let my friends down!
is there any sections within the forum or guidance to help me.
i am sure I can select some sensible dishes but any help would be good.
thank you

I go for 'dry' dishes like tandoori chicken, kebabs or salmon.
To seem like I'm joining in I might have a spoonful of lentils or spinach.
Don't be afraid to order 2 or more starters in place of a main dish.
Ask for extra salad
And most of all enjoy, you are there for friendship and socialising, the food is secondary.
If you can find the menu on line and decide what you are going to choose in advance. It takes soem of the stress away, and gives you more time to chat.

Good evening @Starbuck99 and welcome to the forum.

I'm type 2 diabetic, so would avoid rice dishes and indian breads like chapatis and poppadoms, naan and parathas.
Sauces can be a bit of a minefield so, to be on the safe side. I'd choose a grill or tandoori.

Hi @Starbuck99 Welcome to the forum. Please could you clarify whether you have type 1 or type 2 (your profile says 2, but your question says 1) so that people can give you the best advice.
I am type 1 with insulin, thanks Hopeful34 but how do I change my profile? I can’t find the edit!

Hi @Starbuck99
I am going for an Indian meal this evening. I am T2 in remission but stick to a low carb diet so I will be having:-
Lamb Tikka (Dry) which comes with a salad and a couple of side dishes, probably a Brinjal (augergine) and mushroom. I will just avoid the rice, nan bread and anything likely to have a high carb/sugar content.

Thank you! Avoiding the rice, breads seems good plan, I do like onion bahajis so I think they will ok. Enjoy your meal

We are all different, some of us can breeze through an Indian meal as we have years of experience with adjusting. What works for one may not work for you, t1 is a continuous learning journey. 32yrs in and still learning daily

Mountain out of mole hill makers ,queues , crowds , shopping on a Saturday hmm just shopping I guess no matter what day it is
It’s a difficult one I would normally say as type 1 you can eat anything , which is true , but as it’s been said it takes time to be able to understand how your insulin works for you with different types of food , this doesn’t happen overnight , being newly diagnosed comes its own problems. What would say is take you blood sugars regularly it’ll help you begin to understand how certain foods will affect you , also, don’t worry if your bloods become elevated for a short period , treat it as a learning experience then next time you will know what you can eat and how it affects your blood sugars, diabetes is definitely a “long haul “ flight but it can be full of experimentation and experiences which will definitely help you in the long run

Indian is the wealth of protein.

Mixed Kebab Starter
Mixed Grill main with extra salad and a curry sauce of my choice (generally only have 1/4 of it all the sugar and MSG ha!)

Of all the places to eat out I find the Indian restaurants one of the easiest.

But I am T2 so slightly different approach I think, the one place I won't go to eat out with people now is a Chinese.
