Type of diabetes
Type 1
hello all, hope everyone is well, this is my first post, and am aiming to get as much advice and support as possible. I'm 23, I've had type 1 diabetes since I was 2 and have very recently found out that I am pregnant! :o.
Any advice greatly appreciated, I am waiting for my first hospital appointment but am feeling in limbo!

Hi @Polly4592 welcome to the forum!

Congratulations!
I was in your situation 33 weeks ago so I know how you feel.
Until you get your appointment there's not a lot you can do other than keep your bloods as low as possible until you see your team.
Book in to see your community midwife as well because you'll need one of them also.
Once you've seen both of them you will have a blue pregnancy book and an orange one (blue for community m/w and orange for diabetes) you'll need to take both of these books with you to every appointment.
My diabetes team told me to aim for a bg of 5.0mmol before meal and 8.0mmol after meal but your team will help you achieve this and may even have different targets. I see my diabetes team once a fortnight and have done since I was 7 weeks pregnant so they will keep a very close eye on you :)

Don't stress and enjoy the journey as best you can. (Sometimes easier said than done)

All the best, Claire x

Hi @Polly4592 and congratulations :)

@claire1991 has given very good advice, which I echo. Get used to testing your blood a lot, especially after meals, as that's often a time of highs. If you haven't already, you may also want to do some nighttime tests so you can see what's happening there. I tested around 2am every night I was pregnant.

I'd also add that it's probably sensible to get in plenty of hypo treatments like Lucozade. Hypos are common in the first half of pregnancy, and can come on quickly, need more treatment than normal, and can happen at weird times. So get Lucozade, glucose tablets, little packets of sweets, etc It's good to have a variety as you may get fed up with one, and also nausea can alter your sense of taste.

You may also want to have a read through the pages here so you can get an idea of what pregnancy is like with diabetes. It might give you ideas for questions to ask at your appointment too.

Hiya
Congratulations. I've had 2 pregnancies -daughter age2 and twins 5m.
Like @claire1991 says just try keep your blood sugars as tight as possible-I was told no more than 7.5 after meals 5.5 before. The hospital should check your hba1c too.
I had a diabetic midwife with my twins who was part of the multi disciplinary team so I didn't need a community midwife but I do live in a large city and I only had one set of notes both times.
It's hard work but so worth it.
Ps I used to set my alarm and test a couple of times through the night. I was on a pump which really helped me.
xx
