hi
I'm 47 and was diagnosed 10 days ago. It's been a heck of a year - I had a heart attack and three stents last spring and now this, possibly caused by the statins?
Feeling weepy, confused and all round fed up.
However I read Patrick Holford's book today and am going to try and make changes.

I do not have diabetes
Wow that is one tough year, I admire you for keeping on, and registering on this forum to get support and find information.

I recommend that you watch this link
http://www.ncl.ac.uk/magres/research/diabetes/reversal.htm

Professor Roy Taylor at newcastle has developed a diet and theory that reverses type 2 diabetes. Search the "Newcastle diet " on this forum and you will get loads of people that have reversed their diabetes as predicted by his research,

Also check out the blog of canadian doctor Jason Fung, he is an expert on diabetes and obesity and inspired by Roy taylors research, he is using fasting to cure this ills. Here is his blog
http://intensivedietarymanagement.com/

And here is videoproof of people he has cured

Stay strong and keep on trucking, and good luck!

Hi & Welcome to the forum, I'm afraid I agree with @Roytaylorjasonfunglover the dietician you have quoted I have never heard of.

A lot of people on here follow a LOW CARB HIGH FAT DIET, and now some of the leading dieticians to the government for diabetes are recommending this sort of diet. Look up Dr Trudy Deakins Eat Fat from Xpert Health who is contracted to the NHS for helping diabetics.

I will tag @daisy1 who will come along with very long list of useful information we give to all new members.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

Here is the information we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. Ask all the questions you like and someone will be able to reply.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you’ll find over 140,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.
There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates

Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

Another option is to replace ‘white carbohydrates’ (such as white bread, white rice, white flour etc) with whole grain varieties. The idea behind having whole grain varieties is that the carbohydrates get broken down slower than the white varieties –and these are said to have a lower glycaemic index.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/food/diabetes-and-whole-grains.html

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to bloodglucose testing supplies.

Hello Cazza,
Just want to say welcome and you are one hundred per cent justified in feeling the way you do - a heart attack and major surgery at such a young age! Type 2 diabetes is manageable. I was only diagnosed 3 months ago but have got my morning blood glucose level down to under 6 most mornings by reducing my carbohydrate intake - mostly restricting bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, porridge, breakfast cereals - and eating more protein rich foods. Get a meter and test yourself a one and two hour intervals after eating to see which foods raise your blood glucose and which don't. Some diabetics can tolerate carbohydrates well enough. I have read Patrick Holford's books on other subjects and I am suspicious of the huge amount of supplements he promotes, especially as he has his own brand of supplements and foods that are very expensive. Dr David Cavan's book 'Reverse Your Diabetes' is much more levelheaded and he is an Endocrinologist with a lot of experience in treating diabetes. Do go easy on yourself Cazza and take things one small step at a time,
best wishes,
Ellie

Ah that is great Caz, Dr Cavan's book is much more practical and 'do-able', isn't it? Even the section on exercise, the part I always dread, isn't frightening - just walk more and use the car less! I am a newbie to diabetes myself so any advice I give is only beginner's advice but I am glad you are finding this forum encouraging. I am just after scoffing a bowl of sugar free jelly and cream so the low carb life has it's perks :)
Take care of yourself,
Ellie

Hi CazzaW and welcome to the community, you certainly been through the grinder but hey it's never too late to make the best of the cards life has dealt us.

Some great advice above, just go slow take your time and read heaps, you'll soon have this thing under control, and when you do the health benefits garnished with a little optimism might just put a big old smile back on your face.

I think Dr Cavan is about 100g carb mediterranean/olive oil, I don't think he would be advising to reduce carbs and increase protein very much would he?

Welcome Cazza , and Linda -- to what is perhaps the friendliest place for those of us looking for support & guidance.

Its not easy being 'newly diagnosed' and the self doubt, fear, guilt and anxiety of it all made me feel very ****** for the first week or so. But its the hand I've been dealt and like others on here , its how you deal with it from now that matters not what has happened to get you here.

Join in, ask questions - nothing is silly to ask. There's nothing more foolish than seeking answers to a question but not asking it

I'm not experienced, I've only been diagnosed since Jan '15 ~~ others have been on here for years and many have been diagnosed for decades but we've all been where you are now and I think I can readily speak for everyone on here by saying that everyone remembers their own feelings when newly diagnosed; and as participants on here will readily help others who are new to this life-changing (often in a good way) condition.

Chin up, keep smiling -- its not all doom & gloom :):)

Chin up @CazzaW being newly diagnosed is a big shock to anyone, but you will find loads of help and support on here. Unfortunately for me when I was diagnosed in 2007 I did nowt about it until last week !! Don't make the same mistake as me adopt a good healthy eating plan that suits you and enjoy life.
