Hello everyone! I'm shocked but determined, but I need help

Hi everyone. I used to check my bg regularly as Mum was diabetic, it was always at the higher end of normal, but I hadn't checked it for a few months. Checked it last weekend, first thing one morning, and it was 17.9! As I felt fine, I was convinced the strips were out of date or the machine broken, or something, but no, reality check.

I've since been reading through loads of posts here and feel really glad you guys are here, as my head is spinning as I try to work out what to do...

So here's where I'm at.
I'm 53, vegetarian, thought I ate healthy food, (but too much of it) Have lost about 3 stones in the last couple of years, have about 3 to go to be "normal".

This last week I've been carefully logging my food, cut down drastically on carbs and my fasting bg level has come down steadily over the week to 11.2. Still way too high I know, but I'm hoping it'll continue to drop over the next wee while.

Do you think that's a promising start, or should I be panicking even more than I already am??!

Any advice appreciated - particularly on ideas for veggie diet as, not eating meat, I'm (for once in my life!) struggling to find enough to eat!

Thanks folks!

Just keep with what you are doing and try and reduce those numbers further and given time everything will hopefully come together and your weight will continue to drop. Sorry can't help you regarding a veggie diet! :)

Hi moggies11.
Welcome to the Forum.

I have read your post a few times and I know because you tell us that your Mom was a Diabetic...... however, it's not clear if you are or if so for how long ?? Hope you don't mind me asking.

Ooops sorry, Cugila. No, never been diagnosed or had a bg problem before (that I'm aware of) But I'm guessing with those numbers it's likely. Haven't yet seen the doctor.

Thanks for the prompt replies!

Hi again.
Thanks for that. You definitely need to get a proper diagnosis from a professional as high Bg levels can also be indicative of other things, not just Diabetes. Never assume anything....... please.

Better to be safe than sorry....... :)

Hey Moggie! Well as you are determined..... :) The advice you will get here is very helpful but one of the things I have found interesting is that with diet and exercise your body actually starts to function better. So for example, Just after I was first diagnosed and started my diet, I found that I couldn't cope with a lot of the high carb food at all. I potato -> bg skyrocketed, small handful of pasta or rice, the same. Now after 8 months or so of low impact but consistent exercise and low carb diet, I can -occasionally - have a slice of bread or a little rice or pasta without impacting my bg. I tend to keep it for emergencies of extreme hunger or lack of other suitable food because I'm a bit of an all or nothing girl but it's nice to know that one's body is not necessarily totally knackered once diagnosed. Good luck!
