Been sent here from fasting blood thread to introduce myself.

I have been diagnosed type II in September.

68 reading (Ithink) in December, fasting blood this morning 8.4, down to 6.8 two hours later. Breakfast was mushrooms, scrambled egg and tbsp cheese. Tea, no sugar - I hate no sugar at all though, fruit sugar hasn't really helped, any suggestions?

Hi Shona. I use Truvia which works well for me. It is expensive, but you don't need much. Your figs aren't too bad. You are producing enough insulin to get your BG down from 8.4 to 6.8 in 2 hours which is a reasonable rate and you will get to speed that rate up over time. You just have to learn a bit about your body and what foods to eat, maybe lose weight, which helps with insulin production and try and be more active, which improves insulin sensitivity.

I was a lot higher than you when diagnosed and got down to normal levels within 12 months. Now I wake up to 4.8s. You're already half way there. Just put in a bit of effort and be prepared to learn.

And don't forget to experiment to see what new things you might like and that won't make your BG levels spike.

Hi Shona and welcome,

You were given the link to Daisy's introduction post on the Fasting thread, so hopefully you've had a read of it.

I suggest you ask for print outs of your blood results since diagnosis. It really helps to know exactly where you started and how you are progressing. You are entitled to these.

Diet is the key to controlling this disease. Meds will help a little, but not enough. Carbs are the culprits, not just sugar. Potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, flour all need to be reduced. We also need to be careful with milk and fruit. Have a good read round the forum and come back with your questions.

I think anyone who takes sugar in a hot drink would say that, just try weaning yourself off it (or off the truvia) - you may find quite soon that the tea/coffee tastes better for it.

I've been doing 5:2 for couple of years too, so I know that this will help with losing weight. My bmi is 29, which is bad and I weigh the most I ever have - 71-74kg and 5ft 2ins. I was running up to half marathon level, but last few months had felt more and more awful. Going along the lines of low carb/low gl and trying to keep levels steady. Will read all the links, quite a few of us on 5:2 group following lchf anyway. Just had lentil soup and peanut butter wrap for lunch,

Half marathon eh? Have you checked out the fitness, exercise and sport section? There may be useful info for you there.
