Hello all, I’m age 67 and I’ve been diabetic type 2 for seven years. When I was first diagnosed I went into denial for a long time, although sometimes I tried to keep the carbs low, but my health was suffering! I’ve now been on a Keto diet since February this year. I’ve lost a lot of weight and I feel a lot better. I exercise regularly and test my BG everyday, especially first thing, so I don’t go off the rails! My HbA1c test last week was 40mmol/l, which I’m please about. As I need more recipe ideas I’ve just bought the book ‘The Diabetes Weight-loss Cookbook’ with a forward by Dr David Unwin. I find Dr Unwin quite inspirational, I wish he was my GP!

I am no diet expert really but am sure others will be along to help soon
 
My a1c was 84mmol/l in April 2019. It gradually reduced over the years, but 40 is my lowest. I’m on 1000mg Metformin and would like to eventually come off it.

Re the metformin I was so glad to be able to come off that I asked to go on insulin instead (the side effect was SO bad) Mt levels were 129 now down to 45 at last reading vit dont know now as all the labs doe results are on stroke here in Lancashire

Similar to me; I don't know what mine was, I was just told it was "very high" and that I needed to go on 2000g Metformin immediately, if not sooner! I pointed out that this couldn't have happened overnight, and why hadn't it been flagged in previous years, but apparently "they had all been too worried" about an anomalous blood test result, which they had decided was cancer (spoiler: it wasn't!) to worry about my blood sugar! I was furious!

So, anyway, last year they told me I was down to pre-diabetic levels and well done and keep on doing whatever you're doing (which was mostly not taking a blind bit of notice of having diabetes other than taking the meds!), and then I got invited on to the Ascend Plus trial, which gives you either 14mg oral semaglutide or a placebo. I'm on the semaglutide (one is not supposed to know, but it's patently obvious) with the result that I've lost a lot of weight and my last HbAc1 was 40! I asked if I could reduce my metformin but was told "not yet", which means it's going to be another year before I can. Oh well. They don't give me side-effects any more, although the semaglutide does!

Yes, I’m seeing doctor this week and going to ask if I can reduce the Metformin. I don’t get side effects, but I think my absorption of B12 has decreased, so changed to a spray. Apparently it takes years of insulin resistance before diabetes type 2 develops, but they don’t test your insulin!

metformin I was so glad to be able to come off that I asked to go on insulin instead (the side effect was SO bad) Mt levels were 148 now down to 45 at last reading vital don't know now as all the labs results are currently stable.

can you clarify what type of diabetes you have and exactly what meds you are on as your info is very confusing
Your about info says you are T1 on Tablet (oral) were you not given insulin at the time of your diagnosis? Were you only given Metformin? Extremely unusual for T1. When you asked to go on insulin how long was that after your diagnosis?

Yes, i am continuing since last 2 years taking insulin glp1.
And i know a person who are selling glp1 insulin at very low cost.
 
So are you on a GLP-1 or on insulin? They are not the same thing at all!
Just because you inject something does not make it insulin.

What are the name(s) of what you inject? How often do you inject?

Please can you confirm what type of diabetes you have Type 1 or Type 2, and the exact meds you are on as insulin is not a GLP-1 it’s a different medication altogether.

So if you are taking a GLP-1 then you are not on insulin. If someone is selling you a GPL-1 as insulin then that’s dangerous at best, it could be anything. Where are you based? Do you pay for health care? Is whatever you are taken prescribed by a doctor?

No GPL-1 IS NOT an insulin - in fact it’s the very opposite and it stimulates your body to produce more insulin, impossible in someone who has T1 who doesn’t produce insulin at all or in very small amounts. So you seem very confused to what type of diabetes you have & what medications you are taking - you need to go back to your HCP to verify exactly what type you are & what meds you are taking, either aT1 on insulin or T2 on a GLP-1 - what is the name of the med you are taking - see the list on the link below - if it’s in there then it’s a GLP-1
