Type of diabetes
Type 2
I have had diabetes type 2 for around 4 years. My levels have been all over the place as I have exocrine pancreas insufficiency and my metformin was not absorbing. (I also have Hashimotos). I take 1000 long-lasting Metformin x 2 day, Creon plus thyroixine 175 mcg. My Doctor added Jardiance 10 mg, unfortunately, it didn't agree with my kidneys and had to come off it.

My hba1c levels have been in the last year 8 - 10%. I have been advised that I cannot take other diabetic medications due to my EPI as it may cause more damage to the pancreas.

My diet is good and I exercise daily, mainly walking as I get tired quickly and breathless if I push myself. The weight is now coming off quickly as my thyroxine is also been absorbed properly as I increased the Creon. I have about a stone to loose. (I have lost 2 stones).

I have read that people with exocrine pancreas insufficiency are classed as Diabetes 3C? and require insulin?
I check my glucose levels - when I wake up in the morning they are normally around 9/12 nmol/L and after I have eaten anything between 14mnol/L - 22. I have started to chart what I have eaten, levels before and after meals. I am not due a Hba1c blood test for 3 months.

I have symptoms which I am guessing are when my levels are high - fatigue, funny taste in mouth, trembles, headache and irritable.

I am concerned that with continued high levels that I will cause damage to my organs. Is there anyone with the same problem, EPI, who takes medication other than Metformin which helps their glucose levels?

I look forward to your advise - Thanks :)

Hi and welcome,

You say your diet is good - but is that good for a diabetic, or good because the powers that be say it is? There is a big difference. Maybe if you list some of the foods you eat, meal by meal, we may be able to help.

so confusing

Hi. It may that insulin would be a good match for you if you can't take many of the usual tablets as insulin doesn't cause organ issues. BTW the strange taste will be the Metformin as it's a well-known side effect. Mine lasted for 6 months.

Am I the only one who actually likes the metformin after-taste?
