Hello one and all! This could be long, could be short, it depends on what I feel I need to tell you all! lol!

Anyway, the name's Laura. I'm 21 and I live in the UK in a county called Bedfordshire. I live with my parents, two younger brothers and my doggie, Connie who is a nearing 7 year old Collie X Spaniel X Labrador. Total nutter!! *rolls eyes*

Anyway, a bit about myself. I enjoy doing adrenaline thrilled things though I rarely get the time to do them! Before I turn 25, I want to have swam with dolphins, sky-dived, bungee jumped etc etc etc. I love music. I mainly listen to rock, metal, a bit of indie and the classics! I've been brought up with parents who like the oldies! I work in a day nursery full time. It's a tiring job and I am looking to move to caring for the elderly but that's not quite set in stone yet. Oh, I am also fan of cars! I love watching Top Gear and the F1 racing. So perhaps I'm not your typical girlie girl but I still find pictures of baby ducks, cats, dogs and horses cute! lol! That's another thing I live for- horses. I have been crazy about them since I was very young and have been riding for 11 years now. Though I don't own a horse, I don't get to ride very often and would do anything to be able to be back in the saddle again!

Anyway, on the the less interesting parts about me. I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on 10th April (I THINK!) 2004 at the age of 16. I was just about to start my GCSE exams so my body could not have chosen a worse time to break! lol! I had the typical Diabetes symptoms; increased thirst, going to the loo alot, loss of weight and appetite. In the end, I felt so rough that I literally BEGGED my parents to take me to the doctor. A simple urine test confirmed it and my world went blank. I could see the doctor talking, but I couldn't understand a single one of his words. You never think it's going to happen to you. Anyway, I was sent off to hosptial with a blood glucose level of 39mmol. I was in there for three days. There was so much information to take in and I have to admit, in all the 5 years I've had Diabetes, I've never had any sort of control. I started out on Mixtard 30. I think I was on that for about 18 months-2 years. Not quite sure but it started failing me and I switched to NovoMix30. Biggest mistake of my life!! I should have gone straight onto Basal Bolus! My levels were always off the charts. I changed to Basal Bolus last July after my doctor told me to keep upping my NovoMix30 doses until I was taking over 150 units of insulin a day! Not right for a 20 year old really! I had the prescription for the Basal Bolus insulins (by the way, I take Levemir and Novorapid) and the levels just weren't budging on the NovoMix30 so (being the silly girl I am), I read a bit into the new insulins and just started on Basal Bolus by myself. At first, the results were fantastic! My levels were regulated, I could as and when I wanted but then I sort of took a back seat and slowly things started to slip.

Anyway, that basically brings me round to this present day. I've gone back to the way I was, no control really. I take 15u of Levemir at 7am and 7pm and if I am in the 20's with my levels, that 15u will bring me right the way down to the early teens by the morning. Then, eat breakfast, take the Novorapid and ZOOM! Straight back up! I don't know what I am doing wrong. I am part of another Diabetes forum and they're all telling me different things. People are saying to up the Levemir, others are saying don't do as much Levemir and just up the Novorapid. So I am sort of hoping that maybe some of you can help me regulate my levels.

There's nothing I want more than to the good blood levels, a heatlhy lifestyle and to be able to control my Diabetes.

Can anyone of you help me? I can tell you almost (!) whatever it is you need to know.

Thanks for reading!

Laura

Hi Laura.
Welcome to the forum. Take a good look around and just ask your questions when you are ready.

I am a T2 so I will leave you till one of our T1 experts comes along later to advise you better.
Just to let you know you haven't been forgotten.

Ken.

Hi Laura,

I was diagnosed T1 in similar circumstances to you, just as I was about to begin my exams in 1st year at University! Perfect, eh?
My control used to be rubish too, but over the past 8 years that has turned around completely. I'd be happy to help you get it under control if I can.
A couple of quick pointers based on what you've told us so far. Your numbers are pretty scary right now, we need to get you down to a stable and consistent bg around 5mmol/l. Yes, it can be done.
If your bg is in the 20's before bed and falls overnight, then you're taking eough Levemir, probably too much in fact! The problem is where you're starting from. If you went to sleep at 5mmol/l, your Levemir dose would presumably push your bg's through the floor? Levemirs job is essentially to cancel out the blood sugar generated by your liver throughout the day. Yours is battling against hyperglycemia too.
You also say you eat before you take your Novorapid. Why? If your bg is already elevated, you need to give the bolus a chance to work before you fuel a further bg rise. Always inject before a meal, not after.
Why don't you tell us what your daily diet is like - that's one area I suspect you need to look at closely before you get your bg down to single figures 24/7.
Enjoy the Hungaroring this afternoon by the way!

All the best,

fergus
