Good afternoon.

I hope that this post finds everyone well and managing the global crisis we all currently face.

I am finding it difficult to eat properly at times during the pandemic as so much of what I need isn't available. So I substitute more cardio exercise to offset my dietary deficiencies. While I expect this is a temporary situation, I can't ignore it and have turned here to learn some creative ways to eat healthy when facing shortages of the things we need.

I have been Type II for about 20 years. At first, I did well managing my diabetes, but it has become more difficult as I have grown older.

I began doing weight training about 9 months ago with the goal of getting leaner and adding some bulk, as I understand the the more muscle mass we have, the easier it is for us to use blood sugar.

I've put on 10 pounds, none of which is muscle. My BMI as gone from 21.5 to 26. And after some reading here, I've come tor realize that my Protein intake is about 125-150 grams per day short of the recommended amounts! I've begun supplementing with Whey protein powder.

In the end, it comes down to this: I need to eat better.

Look forward to learning and making some friends along the way.

Be safe!

Welcome. Before we can comment can you tell us how you control your diabetes usually? Medications? Hb1ac? Testing at home? And what sort of way of eating do you currently have/aim for? What’s hard to get right now as it varies a lot by location?

Hello and welcome,

I am a bit curious as to what you normally eat. I'm in Australia so our experience is quite a bit different to elsewhere but have had no real difficulty finding my normal foods- mostly meat and fish but also things like cream, butter and cauliflower.

Welcome- this is the best place to connect with other diabetics.

Hi @Danucci ,

I haven't encountered a whole lot of problems yet... Only last week, they didn't include my frozen cauliflower rice with my order... That was an oversight though, not a matter of having run out. Still have plenty of meats, fish, eggs, poultry and what have you though, so no... I can't say I've experienced any problems. Just loo paper and paper kitchen towels have been iffy. (I do hope people aren't using those to whipe; not sure whether they dissolve the way TP does! :) )

So then the questions become, what do you usually eat, what meds are you on, and can we help in some way to find alternatives?

Good luck with the shopping!
Jo
