Hello Everyone

I have been a bit of a lurker but am coming out of the shadows because you're all so great and I think active support is a good thing.

I was diagnosed Type 2 in August 2015 with my Hbac1 being 47/48 so just on the borderline but nevertheless Type 2. I was shocked to say the least but it explained my weight gain, increased appetite and difficulty losing weight. Originally I had gone to the doctors because I felt tired all the time and got overly hot from a little activity. I thought it might be the change (although I'm only 41 my mother was an early starter!)

Anyway, I immediately began cutting out carbs and after a month lost a stone but then Christmas came...It all went back on (plus a little more) and I have been in denial since then :(

My recent Hbac1 showed a rise to 54 (perhaps no surprise there) so I have agreed to go on metformin (2 tablets a day) and am low carbing (because I don't believe the medication is the only answer). I bought a meter (the surgery won't give me one) and am testing every day and after food.

Fortunately, I am not experiencing any of the serious symptoms sometimes associated with metformin (yay!) and I'm hoping it will control my appetite making it easier to make the changes and shift some weight and get my readings down.

I have struggled withe the guilt/shame/blame associated with diagnosis but am trying to get past that and get better.

Thank you for reading this far and I hope to see you around the Forums.

Hi Lily, Its all too easy to do this . I knew ( inside) that I had diabetes about 18 months before I was actually diagnosed ad by that time I had got up to 92 ! Fortunately the situation can be recovered with the right diet , so you will be able to fix this. I look forward to hearing your progress!

Thanks Cherry! I think with support and accountability I really can beat this. :)

Hi there. Well, you're already doing all the right things so you can look forward to lower bg levels and a weight loss to some degree. As to the blame Shame Game it takes a little while to change the mindset but you must. It is the fault of the media in general and to some extent the dietary advice given by HCPs. Diabetes is a condition like any other, we are unlucky, we are not to blame.

Hi! Yes, the media are awful about this (and most other things to be honest. Ha!). I know mindset is what underlies everything so I'm working on that too for long term success. :)

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

Metformin is not the panacea for weight loss, so be careful of that. Get off it if you and when you can. Diet is the key, then consistent exercise with slow build up

Mike

Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not relying on Metformin for the weightloss. As I said, I'm focusing on low carbing along side the metformin. I intend to come off it as soon as I can. I certainly don't believe drugs are the only answer.:)
