I have found plenty of interesting stuff, I'll post some of my experiences when relevant topics appear!

Hi truedook, So how have you done over the past 20 years with the Diabetes?
I was diagnosed in January 1995, I was working in Abu Dhabi at the time and was diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma during the same trip home. The MM was treated quickly, of course and I started on 1000 mg Metformin daily with instructions to crash the weight off as fast as possible. I was around 21st at the time and dropped to 12st in 8 months, then I had a hypo - had to eat all the ice cream! I put a little weight back on and stayed stable till 1998 then finally started on Insulin. Suffered high readings, told to take more insulin, still high, take more and so on eventually back up to max weight and still being told to take more insulin! At this point I was up to 30 U of Lantus and around 30-40 of Novorapid. So in January of this year I started a diet, more or less eliminating quick absorb carbs and drastically reducing portion sizes. I lost a few pounds, nice and steady, but suffered a minor heart attack in March and a Gall Bladder infection at the same time, all fixed up and home a fortnight later with no stents but a partially blocked coronary artery which was left untreated. Five weeks later I suffered heart failure. Terrible experience but again fixed up and sent home. Now determined to get as healthy as possible, gave up smoking, follow low carb diet but added apples and pears, I have no problems with glucose spikes, a month later I started using an exercise bike. And I feel much better. My diet is now Breakfast: Alpen and coarse porridge mixed with cold water or kippers or 2 wholemeal toast with marmalade, Lunch: I generally don't bother but have an apple or pear whenever I get peckish, generally eat 3 or 4 a day. Dinner: stir fry or curry. Exercise is two 15 minute sessions on the bike, pushing fairly hard. With this regime my Lantus need is down to 12 U and Novorapid down to 8-10 U. Meanwhile Blood are typically 4-10. probably the first time since childhood my blood glucose has been anywhere near right! In 1981 when I was 28 I had a medical and was told I had glucose in my urine, I said I'd had a few beers the night before and they said that was probably what caused the sugar in urine!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Hope you don't mind me asking... But
I visited my doctor the other day and he mentioned apples being particularly notorious for raising blood sugars, not sure why but he mentioned a study on the effects of certain foods on blood sugars. You said in your post you have no problems with spikes, did you mention that because apples are known to spike blood sugars, in your experience? Sorry to ask questions before you've settled in but it would be interesting to know.

I find apples and pears give no problems with spikes and make an excellent snack when peckish.

Hi there, I think I went undiagnosed from early teens until my 21st birthday. Its amazing how long somebody can go on for isn't it, without medical interception. I'm a type one though, ****** genetics. Hope you are doing well now, there was a unique point where I was in control but apart from that like you I suffer yoyo-ing blood sugar levels. Although im sure going through this ite a lot more and asking questions i'll eventually get back on track. A.
